18 Activity # 1 Popsicle Stick Game Throughout the school year, your child is constantly being asked questions while they read. The questions are often related to the story or regarding key skills or basic story elements. Many of my students have a hard time answering these types of questions or remembering what these key element terms mean, so I decided to introduce this game that will hopefully help strengthen these skills. This game will help start & encourage the important thought processes and discussions that play a key role in reading comprehension!!

19 What to do? Step 1. Look at the following list and pick 10 key question that fit your child’s grade level and needs. Step 2. Write each question on a popsicle stick. (1 per stick) and place them in a zip tight baggie. You may want to include the word on one side and the meaning on the other. Step 3. While reading with your child, have them select a popsicle stick and answer it. At first, encourage your child to answer the question orally. To take it up a notch, encourage your child to write the answer. Be sure to look for capitals, periods and complete sentences. Step 4. After your child has mastered a key term/ question make a new popsicle stick with a new question/concept and add it to your baggie while taking the old one out.

20 Look at the list! Right Now : Discuss this list with your child and pick 10 topics or questions they need help with or do not understand!

21 Get Started Each Child Needs: O 1 Baggie O 10 popsicle sticks O 2 markers
