11 As part of CIHR's ongoing commitment to the continued improvement of ResearchNet, updates to the user home page were made in June.  Upon log in, users will notice a new navigation bar on the left side of the page which will allow them to access their activities by role. This redesigned navigation structure is based on the results of a usability study and user testing with members of CIHR's research community. 12 Further enhancements have been made to those introduced last summer. New software version Selection of funding organization and template on the same page; Funding organizations can now limit the number of publications that they receive; Select/deselect of all records for submission with a single mouse click; PIN label has been renamed to PIN/System Account throughout the application. Ability to import publications from external bibliographic databases We can import publications directly from the web or a file Supports many databases and more will be available in the future; PubMed Articles section were migrated to the Journal Articles section. 13 EApproval As announced in our recent “CIHR Funding News”, we have implemented the Electronic Approval Process for the following funding opportunities: CIHR Doctoral Research Award CIHR Fellowship CIHR New Investigator Salary Award The eApproval process allows Administrators at an Institution Paid to review and electronically approve applications for which the applicant has identified their institution as the Institution Paid. Once the applications are approved, the Institution Paid will be submitting the applications electronically to CIHR on behalf of the applicant.

17 Undergraduate : CIHR Health Professional Student Research Award This program funds… Health Professional students enrolled in an undergraduate program (such as nursing or dental hygiene), graduate program (such as psychology or social work) or health professional program (such as chiropractic medicine) leading to Canadian licensure. Value: From $4,251 and up to $5,961 per voucher, for students enrolled in combined programs. Term: up to 13 weeks Application Deadline: December 2014 Funds Available: $1,000,000

18 Canada Graduate Scholarships – Master’s Program This program funds… high caliber scholars who are engaged in eligible Masters or, in some cases, doctoral programs in Canada. Candidates must have completed, as of December 31st of the year of application, between 0 and 12 months of full-time studies. Annual Stipend: $17,500 Term: up to 12-month Application Deadline: December 1 st, 2014 Number of Awards Available: 400

22 Doctoral Awards Funding is available for… Doctoral students in Canada and Abroad. Three envelopes of funding: Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (VCGS) Frederick Banting and Charles Best Canada Graduate Scholarships – Doctoral Awards (CGS-D) CIHR Doctoral Foreign Study Award (CIHR DFSA)

23 Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships Program www.vanier.gc.ca www.vanier.gc.ca  Deadline (university nominations): November 5, 2014  Value: $50,000 per annum  Duration: Three years  Open to Canadian citizens, permanent residents of Canada, and international students and offered by CIHR, NSERC and SSHRC  Aims to attract and retain world-class doctoral students by supporting students who demonstrate both leadership skills and a high standard of scholarly achievement in graduate studies  Applicants must be nominated by a Canadian university with a Vanier allocation and awards can only be held at the nominating university

24 Doctoral Awards CGS-D & DFSA This program funds Canadian students and permanent residents who are pursuing a PhD degree in a health-related field in Canada or abroad. Canada Graduate Scholarships Doctoral Award (CGS-D): -for the top-ranked applicants pursuing doctoral research training at a Canadian institution Doctoral Foreign Study Award (DFSA): -for those applying to pursue doctoral research training abroad Stipend per annum: up to $30,000 Research Allowance per annum: up to $5,000 Term: Up to three years Application Deadline: October 1, 2014

25 This program funds existing Canadian Vanier and Canada Graduate Scholarship (CGS) Master’s or Doctoral Award recipients interested in building global linkages and international networks through the pursuit of exceptional short-term research experiences at research institutions outside of Canada. Supplement: up to $6,000 Term: three to six months Application Deadlines: June 10 th and October 10 th CGS Michael Smith Foreign Study Supplement (CGS-MSFSS)

26 CGS to Honour Nelson Mandela (New!) These awards celebrate Nelson Mandela’s legacy, and his tireless pursuit of peace, democracy, justice and freedom through learning, understanding and education. The awards seek to recognize and support graduate students conducting research in one or more of five areas championed by Nelson Mandela: national unity; democracy, freedom and human rights; leadership; children’s participation in society; and children’s health. Number of awards: Up to 10 CGS Master’s (CGSM); and Up to 10 CGS Doctoral (CGSD)

27 CIHR MD/PhD Program Grants This program funds… MD/PhD Program Directors for support of students pursuing a combined MD/PhD degree at a Canadian institution. Annual Stipend : $21,000 Annual Research Allowance: $1,000 Term: up to six years Application Deadline: September 15, 2014 Funds Available: approximately 18 vouchers per annum

28 Fellowship Awards Funding is available for… student at the post-PhD and post-health professionals degree level. Two envelopes of funding: Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships Program CIHR Fellowships

29 Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships Program Objectives: Attract and retain top-tier postdoctoral talent nationally and internationally; Develop their leadership potential; and Position them for success as research leaders of tomorrow, positively contributing to Canada's economic, social and research-based growth through a research-intensive career. 30 CIHR Fellowship This program funds… trainees with PhD and/or health professional degree(s) that are proposing research training in Canada or abroad. Annual Stipend : $21,000 to $55,000  Depending on the background of the awardee and where the award is held Annual Research Allowance : $5,000 Term: up to five years  Depending on the intended use of the award Application Deadline: November 14, 2014

31 Priority Announcements Offer additional sources of funding for highly rated applications that are relevant to specific CIHR research priority areas. Candidates may request to be considered for up to three priority announcement research areas in each competition, within their application. Priority Announcements are offered through the Fellowship and New Investigators programs.

32 CIHR Science to Business Program This program is designed to… encourage individuals with PhDs in a health related field to pursue an MBA. Annual Stipend: $30,000 per annum for a full-time MBA $15,000 per annum for a part-time MBA Term: up to 2 years Application Deadline: February 2015 Applications to be received: approximately 20 applications Funds Available: t he total amount available for this funding opportunity is $500,000.

33 CIHR Science Policy Fellowships Program This program is designed to… provide highly qualified candidates at the doctoral, post-doctoral, new investigator and mid-senior investigator stages of health research with the opportunity to learn more about current health policy activities and the science/policy interface. Annual Stipend: from $35,000 to $80,000 per annum Term: up to 6 months Application Deadline: December 2014 Funds Available: Not yet determined

34 Application Process Award programs use an automated application process through the use of ResearchNet (with few exceptions) Make sure to review the: “How to Apply” section and the Application Instructions (if applicable) of the Funding Opportunity to which you are applying “Guide for Reviewers” to get a perspective of how your application will be evaluated “Grants and Awards Guide” for policies related to the administration of applications and awards

35 CIHR Sponsor’s Assessments Candidates should choose sponsors that know them well enough to be able: to assess their potential to provide specific examples of their behaviour with respect to each characteristic on the sponsor assessment form For most programs, an automatic e-mail will be sent through ResearchNet to the chosen sponsors: After all sponsors have submitted their assessments, this task will be marked as Complete in the ResearchNet Application Task List Sponsors must submit their assessments 48hrs prior to the competition deadline date

38 Applications to more than one competition Candidates may only apply to one competition in the same year (ie: September through August) Exception to this rule: Applying to an open competition and to the Vanier competition Applying to an open competition and to the Banting competition

39 CIHR’s research themes CIHR’s funds a broad spectrum of health research, categorized into four themes: 1.Biomedical Research 2.Clinical Research 3.Health Services Research 4.Social, cultural, environmental and population health

40 Tips for applicants Follow instructions and adhere to format guidelines (e.g., font, page limits) Use the full page allowances and/or characters limits Order the transcripts several weeks before the deadline (if applicable) A CCV may be required for the supervisor (see funding opportunity). If so, a CIHR PIN for the supervisor is also required. In order to attach the CCV to the application, applicant will require the CCV confirmation number. During peak periods, there can be a delay between the time that the CV is being submitted and when ResearchNet is able to validate it. It is highly recommended that the CV be submitted well in advance of the competition deadline.

41 Tips for applicants Applicants are encouraged to… find out the institution internal deadline for application submission start several weeks before the deadline work on the research proposal in collaboration with their supervisor/mentor proofread their application show the complete application to their supervisor/mentor, peers and other researchers for feedback Incomplete or late applications will not be accepted. All ResearchNet tasks must be listed as complete in order to allow successful application submission. Do not wait until the last minute to submit the application!

42 Common issues with CCV Degree information (completed or in progress) must be provided. Interruptions or situations that could explain delays in training and research should be listed in the sub-section “Leaves of Absence and Impact on Research” under “Employment”. CV attachment entitled 'List of Publications’ should provide, for each multi-authored publication, the role of the candidate in the publication and their percent contribution to the team effort. Candidate may also comment on environmental factors that affected their capacity to publish.

43 Each program has a set of peer review committees that are created specifically to review applications for that program: Most committees review applications relevant to a specific research theme or group of themes Committees for Doctoral and Fellowships awards use a “individual’’ review process. Reviews are done individually by reviewers and submitted to CIHR via ResearchNet. Others meet face-to-face. Selection Process

45 Evaluation Criteria The evaluation of applications submitted to most training awards programs are based on the following three review criteria:  Achievements and Activities of the Candidate  Publication and other activities, academic performance  Characteristics and Abilities of the Candidate  Critical thinking, Independence. Perseverance. Originality. Organizational skills, Interest in discovery, Research Ability, Leadership  Research Training Environment  Training program, scientific activities, research resources, training record.

50 CIHR also supports trainees, indirectly, through research grants. In 2012-13, close to 1300 trainees were supported via the CIHR STIHR program. This includes: 67 undergraduate 263 master’s students 555 doctoral students 280 post-doctoral students 110 other students Plus at least 1000 Fellows, 1300 Doctoral Students, 1500 Masters’ and 1900 Undergraduates were supported by research grants.
