Shared Hope International We know that the vulnerabilities that create open doors for teens and youth to be manipulated into sex trafficking start at a young age. BUT THERE’S HOPE! You can start now to protect and educate your children so they won’t be a target for predators.

Shared Hope International SHOW ‘WAITING FOR YOU TO NOTICE’ ANIMATED VIDEO

Shared Hope International THE BASICS What makes kids vulnerable to being recruited by traffickers?  BEING A TEENAGER Insecurity Lonely Feels misunderstood Wants to fit in

Shared Hope International Our primary tool for PREVENTION EDUCATION against sex trafficking is the documentary CHOSEN which tells the story of TWO GIRLS who were NOT at risk BUT still were vulnerable to the tactics of traffickers.

Shared Hope International Some things are frightening. We serve our communities with prevention education to help keep our children safe from predators.

Shared Hope International SO HOW DOES THIS APPLY TO MOTHERS OF PRESCHOOLERS?  “Culture proofing” your kids  What is Good Touch/Bad Touch  What are Good pictures/ Bad pictures

CULTURE PROOF YOUR KID OUR CULTURE TEACHES THEM through advertising which is aimed at 6-8 year olds o Children are convinced that they MUST HAVE certain clothing, shoes, toys, games, accessories …or they aren’t “IN” o That they are NOTHING if they haven’t traveled to another country, visited Disney or experienced the big wide world

GOOD TOUCH/ BAD TOUCH GOOD TOUCH/ BAD TOUCH is a broad topic and each family will determine what fits them best. o Give them ownership of their body o Use appropriate language o Keep conversation light and easy o Consider & Adapt the ‘swimsuit’ rule o Empower them to say NO loudly & repeatedly o Don’t force affection o Be the safe place to talk o Help them trust their feelings o Practice or Role Play

HOW GOOD PARENTS MISS THE SIGNS OF ABUSE Asking in front of another adult upon pick up: “Did you listen? Were you good?” Or asking that Adult “Did they obey/ behave?” Sends the message: “You are supposed to do whatever you are told by the person watching you while I am gone”

5 QUESTIONS TO ASK IN THE PARKING LOT OR IN THE CAR 1. How did you spend your time? 2. What was your favorite part of the party? 3. Did anything make you sad? 4. Did you feel safe? 5. Was there anything you wished I knew?

GOOD PICTURES/ BAD PICTURES What are GOOD PICTURES/BAD PICTURES? Porn is rampant – innocently accessible Average age of seeing porn online is age 8 Causes mixed feelings in a child Highly Addictive First reactions can be ‘undone’ if disclosed and explained

Shared Hope International Just as with BAD TOUCH - Be sure you child is prepared to REFUSE for anyone to ever take pictures of them without their clothing on, or in any position that makes them feel uncomfortable. ALWAYS SAY NO ALWAYS TELL YOU ABOUT IT

TOOLS TO SAFEGUARD YOUR LITTLE ONES NOW Be proactive. Educate yourself!!  INTERNET SAFETY  POPULAR CULTURE Including song lyrics, dance moves clothing styles, attitudes If you see something on television ask them, “What do you think of the way that girl is dressed? Dances? How do you think that attitude might be dangerous?

YOU CAN DO THIS ! Grow with your kids and expand the conversation  It’s never going to be ONE conversation that prepares them for all of life.  Be the safe place they can talk about anything  LISTEN to them. Put your phone down, make eye contact and listen. Even to the little stuff. So they will open up about the big stuff because they know you want to hear them.

THANK YOU Thank you for allowing Shared Hope International to be a part of your conversation today. We are a resource for you at www.sharedhope.org
