Pd 1 Thurs 2/26 – Snow Delay AGENDA Finish Species Discussion/Rabbit Species Classification Notes/Lion Worksheet CH 16 SRs – any questions?

7. Classification Chap 17 IWBAT describe the Linnaean system for classification organisms How many names can you think of for this animal?

One animal, many names: Depending on where you live it is called: –Puma –Mountain lion –Cougar –Panther Scientific Name: –Felis concolor

CLASSIFICATION is the grouping of objects or organisms based on a set of criteria.

EARLY ATTEMPTS AT CLASSIFICATION Aristotle –394-322 B.C. –Developed widely accepted system of biological classification –Classified as either plants or animals Based on structure similarities

Aristotle’s Classification System

ARISTOTLE’S LEGACY Taxonomy- science of naming and classifying organisms

CAROLUS LINNAEUS- A SWEDISH NATURALIST 18 th Century Broadened Aristotle's classification system Included all organisms Based on observational studies of organisms

LINNAEUS Binomial Nomenclature- –system of giving each organism a two-word scientific name that consists of a genus followed by the species

SKIP -17.2 Systematics Phylogenetics –study of evolutionary relationships between taxonomic groups Phylogenetic Tree = hypothesis for relationships. Cladistics is a style of phylogeny that uses the idea of shared and derived characteristics to group organisms. Shared character for vertebrates = spinal cord Derived character for birds = feathers

SKIP Building a cladogram

SKIP Molecular Cladistics As systematists use biotech to analyse DNA it often creates conflicting info from older evidence. Cladistics is currently an area where groupings are constantly changing as new evidence emerges

Classification Human example: Kingdom Animalia Phylum Chordata Class Mammalia Order Primates Family Hominidae Genus Homo Species sapiens

Comparing Cats CLASSIFICATIONMountain LION House Cat KINGDOMANIMALIA PHYLUMCHORDATA CLASSMAMMALIA ORDERCARNIVORA FAMILYFELIDAE GENUSFelis SPECIESconcolordomesticus

CLASSIFICATION DNA OF TWO ANIMALS IN SAME LEVEL = MORE SIMILAR THAN DNA OF TWO ANIMALS IN LEVEL ABOVE DNA OF TWO ANIMALS IN SAME LEVEL = LESS SIMILAR THAN DNA OF TWO ANIMALS IN LEVEL BELOW Which organisms are more related? Same family or same genus?

Q: Which level of classification is the largest? Q: Which level of classification is the smallest?

Mice and rats belong to the same family. Which of these is NOT the same between mice and rats? 1.Species 2.Kingdom 3.Order 4.Phylum

Remembering classification levels: How do you remember the notes on a music scale? E, G, B, D, F Every Good Boy Does Fine Home assignment: Figure out a way to remember the classification levels: K, P, C, O, F, G, S

Classification of Organisms Kingdom -Animalia Phylum-Chordata Class-Mammalia Order-Carnivora Family-Felidae Genus-Panthera Species-tigris What animal have we just classified? leo

SPECIES What does it mean for two organisms to belong to the same species? ORGANISMS IN THE SAME SPECIES CAN PRODUCE FERTILE OFFSPRING (THEIR OFFSPRING CAN HAVE BABIES)

HW STUDY FOR TEST Friday 2/27. Lab Tomorrow – Review plus Hardy Weinberg and Classification.

Test Topics 14 – Abiogenesis (redi, spalanzani, pasteur ) endosymbiosis, radioactive dating, miller-urey experiments, DNA or RNA first, 15 – Evolution, Darwin’s Theory of Nat Sel, Evidence of evolution (how/why?) see ppt also. How are co-evolution, divergent, adaptive radiation, convergent evolution related to the idea of Evo 16 – Gene Pool and Hardy Weinberg – 5 factors, p+q=1 Speciation (isolation) & rates of speciation Modes of Natural selection (stabilizing, disruptive, directional) 17 – Basic traits for 6 kingdoms, KCPOFGS, Scientific names
