1 Primary Education Educational System

2 There are 3 levels in the Greek educational system, which are: 1) Primary education (kindergarten and primary school) 2)Secondary education (high school) 3)Higher education (superior and supreme) Higher education is divided into 3 sections. a) Bachelor b) Master c) PhD the aims of our educational system are:  The transmission and the improvement of our national culture  The formation of the children’s character  The development of their intelligence  The supply of young people with knowledge and skills, so that they will be able to adapt to any changing social and economical situation.

3 KINDERGARTEN  For children from 4 to 6 years old.  Children are taught basic skills and acquire knowledge through creative play and social interaction  They take lessons, such as painting, art, construction, theater, puppetry, music, etc.  They come in contact with children of their age and make their first friends  There are also all-day kindergarten for working parents.  As well as kindergartens for children with special needs.

4 Primary school  For children aged 6 to 12 years  It’s mandatory  The purpose of the primary school in the first grade is reading, writing and obtaining general knowledge.  The purpose in the following classes is to deepen their knowledge and gain some new. Also students are sensitized to issues related to environmental protection.  The courses in first class are: arithmetic, Greek, English, art, music and gymnastics.  To the next classes are added: geography, history, religion, nature, second language (German, French, Spanish, Italian), social and political education.  In the first classes children take a certificate and they continue to the next class.  In the 3 rd and 4 th class they are evaluated with A, B, or C.  While in the 5 th and the 6 th class they are evaluated until 10, which is the best grade.

6 Also… there are primary schools for..  Gypsies, for whom there are special preparatory programs.  Foreign students, for whom there are special programs at 12 elementary schools of intercultural education which operate in various parts of the country.  Children with special needs  Children whose parents work late (all-day primary schools)

7 Junior – Senior High School

8  Junior along with senior high school are a part of secondary education in Greece.  It consists of 3 grades.  Junior high school starts at the age of 12.  It is mandatory for everyone.

9  To provide a versatile education for every student based on the abilities they have acquired at that certain age.  To develop children’s critical thinking.  To socialize with other children.

11  Senior high school is not mandatory.  It consists of three grades.  When finishing junior high school, one can choose to attend either General or Vocational High School.

12 GOALS:  To provide versatile education.  To develop the abilities, the initiatives, the creativity and the critical thinking of young students.  To provide students with the necessary knowledge and skills in order for them to succeed in their after school lives.

14 There are three specialized sections of subjects:  Scientific studies  Theoretical studies  Technological studies.

18 AAt the end of every school year students take tests on every subject in order to revise their knowledge and to be promoted to the next grade. EEntrance to Tertiary Education requires participation in national exams, which take place every May, after the end of senior year.

23 Technical College (Polytechneio) Subjects of each class include sciences of engineering or applied sciences and technology Polytechnic classes last 5 years

24 Technological Educational Institute Technological preparation for employment requiring scientific knowledge. Studies 8 or 9 half-years, depending on the class, with 35 hours of lessons per week’ May organize post-graduate or doctorate studies.

25 Greek Open University Pro- and post-graduate education from a distance May provide diplomas on 5 different levels, from bachelor to doctorate Students pay their tuition themselves.
