Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial President of the United States from 1933 – 1945 Addressed people of America through fireside chats. Inspired courage and optimism in Americans during the Great Depression Memorial is made up of 4 outdoor “rooms” – one for each of his terms in office. First memorial in D.C. designed to be completely wheelchair accessible. Why?

World War II Memorial Honors men and women who lost their lives in WWII More lives were lost and more property was destroyed in WWII than in any other war. Two arches represent the Atlantic and Pacific regions involved in the war. The Freedom Wall honors Americans who lost their lives. 4,048 gold stars, each star represents 100 who died. How many died?

World War II Memorial The memorial has 56 pillars, each one with the name of the state or territory involved. Look for Virginia or your home state! Rainbow Pool is at the center. If you see a veteran visiting the memorial, take a moment to thank them and ask them about their experience

Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Opened in 2011 Design focuses on themes of justice, democracy, and hope which is represented by the water, stone, and trees on the site. It contains 14 quotes from speeches, sermons and writings. Made of three massive stones – together the feature is called the Mountain of Despair and Stone of Hope, into which Dr. King’s statue is carved.

Vietnam Veterans Memorial Dedicated in 1982. Consists of two walls of polished granite. Walls are inscribed with names of over 58,000 men and women killed and missing in the Vietnam War. Names of those who died are marked with a diamond, MIA with a cross. If an MIA returns alive, a circle is placed around the cross. If an MIA is determined to have died, a diamond is placed on top of the cross. Designed by Maya Ying Lin, a Yale student who won a competition.

Vietnam Veterans Memorial Sculpture of three soldiers and flag was placed off to the side to ease controversy about the memorial being “nontraditional.” As you pass by, you will see servicemen and families looking for their loved ones’ names on the wall. The Vietnam Women’s Memorial is located nearby.

Korean War Veterans Memorial Consists of 19 U.S. ground troops on combat patrol. There are 15 Army, 2 Marines, 1 Navy, and 1 Air Force. Etched in granite are photographs of hundreds of faces taken from military archives. Built to honor those who fought in the Korean War

Lincoln Memorial Built to honor President Abraham Lincoln. Contains 36 columns meant to represent the Union at the time of Lincoln’s death. The North wall contains Lincoln’s second inaugural address. The South wall contains the Gettysburg Address.
