1. Coastlands School News By the pupils of Coastlands Issue 21: March/April 2016 The Brilliant Bard Last weekend it was the 400 th anniversary of the death of William Shakespeare. So on Monday, Class Three – with the help of our new improved broadband – joined in with the BBC Live Lesson about Shakespeare’s plays. We learned about the comedy, tragedy and the history plays and joined in with Henry V as the king rallied his troops for battle. Also, we thought about how to stage parts of Macbeth and how to add humour to A Midsummer Night’s Dream. It was a really fun lesson! Everyone especially enjoyed the drama activities. And we’re hoping we can get to take part in the Shakespeare Schools Festival again next year. DADS Goes Bonkers in Brazil! In mid March 10 students from Coastlands C.P. School took part in the DADS (Dale Amateur Dramatic Society) production of ‘DADS Goes Caracas in Rio’. This year the production was set in Brazil and based on the Olympics. The Coastlands pupils were all birds in a dance.​ Everyone had a great night. Thanks to Emily and Mrs Thorpe for helping us with the dancing. Welsh Concert Earlier last month a group of Coastlands pupils took part in the Welsh concert at Milford Haven secondary school. It was a fun evening. We heard lots of lovely singing and poems. We enjoyed a drama about Barti Ddu, a Welsh pirate – although it did go on for quite a long time. Stars of the show were the Welsh male singing group called Bois Y Frenni. Even though we didn’t always know what they were singing, we really liked the song about the motorbike. WORLD BOOK DAY On March 3 rd we had great fun for World Book Day. We dressed up as our favourite characters from story books and there were some amazing creations. There was a fantastic Stick Man, pirates, fairies and all sorts of other costumes. You had to be there to believe it! Furthermore, we enjoyed sharing our favourite books with our friends and teachers. Digital Projects Our work in our ‘triad’ with Sageston and St. Florence schools has been going well. Class Three met with pupils from the other schools to share the Manor Park animal fact files we created on Hwb. Class One have been writing about their trip to the Peugeot garage in JIT5, while Class Two had a visit from children from St. Florence and Sageston to see their digital photography of Dale. We have really enjoyed working with the other children and helping each other to learn how to use Hwb. Well done everyone who helped out and went along to the Easter Bingo. It was a very successful night, earning £822 in profit, to help fund exciting things for school. Thank you for your support. “Have you done your homework yet?!” Hopefully the days of when you had to nag your child to do their homework are gone, due to...Unhomework! Last term Class Two tried out the approach. Everyone was set a list of challenges on the topic of the Titanic. They could choose which one to do when, and the more effort they made the more points they got. People made menus, tickets, models, even costumes! Class Two did some amazing homework but it was up to them when, what (and even if) they did it. So this term, all the classes are giving it a go. Class One and Two have all got challenges relating to our theme: Our Locality. Class Three’s unhomework topic is: Build your Own Country. Already, Zac Rumble has created an imovie trailer advertising holidays in ‘Anno’ (the country he has ‘built’), Sophie Marshall has designed an amazing flag for ‘Seatropolis’ and Emilia Clarke has written an account of the day in the life of one of the citizens of ‘Veirdou’. Lots of people are even posting and sharing their homework on Hwb. So come on everyone, get cracking at your unhomework and see those points mount up – it’s up to you...

2. Urdd Residential Visit From 14 th -16 th March a group of children from Years 5 and 6 went to stay at the Urdd Centre Glan-llyn, near Bala lake. They did loads of fun activities including raft building, canoeing, orienteering and ten pin bowling. It was a long way to travel, but it was a great couple of days. The activities were brilliant! Unfortunately, one of the boys was sick on the first night and then loads of the boys were throwing up all the way home. Yuck! Never mind, they had a fabulous time (although they didn’t get much sleep...) and can’t wait to go away again. Thanks to the PTA who paid some money towards the trip. Dydd Gwyl Dewi Hapus Thank you to all the parents who came to join in with our St. David’s Day celebrations on March 1 st. We enjoyed singing and playing our instruments. Well done to everyone who won certificates and thanks to the School Council, who had the difficult job of judging the art competitions. It was also great to have lots of contributions of fair trade cakes and biscuits for our fair trade cake stall. Diolch yn fawr i bawb! ECO COMMITTEE NEWS The eco committee are busy at the moment, with lots of events coming up. Next month there will be Walk to School Week and we will be organising our ‘walking bus’ and walk from Herbrandston (across Sandy Haven). We are also hoping to involve our Bronze Sports Ambassadors and organise a ‘pedometer challenge’ for that week - more details to follow! In June we will be holding a ‘No Electric Day’ along with lots of other eco schools in Pembrokeshire. To coincide with the launch of our re-vamped eco- mascots, the eco-committee will be helping out in a special assembly to remind/teach pupils the Coastlands Eco Rap. We sang a song called ‘Pam Fod y Glaw’. We didn’t win but we enjoyed the experience and would like to thank Mrs Halls for coming and playing for us. Yellow House Wins the Day With only one point in it, Mr Evans finally revealed in a recent assembly that it was Yellow House who were the winners at this year’s swimming gala. The event itself was a bit rushed, but everyone who swam had a good time – and the spectators were well-behaved too! Thanks to everyone who came to watch, and to Mr Evans for organising it all. cackle corner My dog used to chase people on a bike a lot. It got so bad, finally I had to take his bike away. Can a kangaroo jump higher than a house? Of course, a house doesn’t jump at all.
