5 The American Board for Certification for Teacher Excellence (ABCTE) is a non- partisan non-profit 501(c)3 organization established by the United States Department of Education. South Carolina General Assembly passed the ABCTE Excellence Act in June 2007. We currently have 52 ABCTE certified educators teaching in the content areas of: BiologyChemistryEnglish MathematicsPhysicsScience And the recently added content areas of: Middle Level Science Middle Level Language Arts Middle Level Mathematics

6 Steps and Requirements Must have earned at least a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college/university Successfully complete the ABCTE Certification Online Program * Current cost of program is $2,100 * Completion of program is self-paced * Achieve passing scores on the content specific exam and the practical teaching knowledge exam * Request passing scores be submitted to our office

7 Certification Application Process Submit Initial Application via online or mail * $105 application fee * Copy of social security card * Official transcripts * ABCTE Passport Certificate * ABCTE official score report

8 Alternative Certificate to Professional At the completion of your application process you will receive your Statement of Eligibility Once employed you must teach successfully for three academic years in a South Carolina public or charter school (yearly renewal) Successfully complete the induction and summative ADEPT evaluation requirements Pass the Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT) pedagogy exam for grades 9-12

11 Teach for America’s partnership with South Carolina was established in 2011. There are currently 160 Corps Members servicing 14 rural school districts which includes Orangeburg and the Pee Dee along Interstate 95 and in the Low Country including Colleton and Berkeley Counties. Teach for America recruits rising seniors, new graduates, and professionals with diverse backgrounds, a passion for education, and an understanding of the challenges low income students face in obtaining an excellent educations.

12 Teach For America – South Carolina recently launched RiseSC, an initiative to build partnerships throughout the state, primarily on university and College campuses and with professional organizations to increase the number of corps members with South Carolina ties who are committed to remaining in South Carolina.

18 Career and Technology Work-Based Certification Career and Technology (CTE) Work-based certification is based on your work experience and education. Candidates will be placed on the bachelor’s degree pay scale up to the doctorate level based on experience and education. Degrees must be relevant to the subject area and from an accredited school

Culinary Arts Associate’s in Culinary or Baking and pastry, Hands-on work experience as a chef and/or sous chef and directly involved in the preparation of food. Diesel Technology HS Diploma/GED, Hands- on work experience as a diesel engine repair technician

21 Digital Art and Design HS Diploma/GED, Hands- on work experience in the marketing/advertising industry directly responsible for the design, development and production of print/web marketing/advertising materials Drafting Associate’s Degree in Related Area, Hands-on work experience as a draftsman/CADD technician Electricity HS Diploma/GED, Hands-on work experience as a residential or commercial electrician

22 Electronics HS Diploma/GED, Hands-on work experience as an electronics repair technician. “Remove and Replace” repair does not meet the industry work experience requirement. Emergency and Firefighting Services HS Diploma/GED, Hands-on work experience as a county or municipal fire fighter. Engineering Technology Associate’s Degree in Related Area, Office of Career and Technology Education approval required prior to application

23 Environmental Control Systems HS Diploma /GED, Hands-on work experience as an HVAC residential or commercial installation /repair technician Graphic Communications HS Diploma/GED, Hands-on work experience in the print industry; design, pre-press, press; and post-press operations using a variety of mechanical/inked print machines Health Science Technology Associate’s Degree in Related Area, Hands-on work experience in one of the approved health care professions after professional licensure. Professional health care license required.(RN, Athletic Trainer, etc.)
