2 Chapter 4 Lesson 1 Mental & Emotional Disorders OBJECTIVES: You will be learn to... 1. Identify types of anxiety disorders 2. Describe 2 mood disorders 3. Identify signs of major depression VOCABULARY (7): Disorder, Anxiety Disorder, Phobia, Personality Disorder, Mood Disorder, Major Depression, Schizophrenia

3 Kinds of Mental & Emotional Disorders Mental & emotional disorders are as real as physical disorders DISORDER: a disturbance in the normal function of a part of the body Myths: They are not true illnesses, people can "snap out" of them

4 Anxiety Disorders Anxiety and worrying are normal in certain situations Problem when it is frequent and unreasonable ANXIETY DISORDER (disorder in which intense anxiety or fear keeps a person from functioning normally) 5 types 1.Generalized Anxiety Disorder Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder 3.Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder PHOBIA: intense or exaggerated fear of a specific situation or object Panic Disorder

5 Personality Disorders PERSONALITY DISORDER: psychological condition that affects a person's ability to interact normally with others - People have a basic need to belong and be accepted - Some people struggle with this -Ex: passive-aggressive (trouble cooperating) & borderline (trouble with relationships)

6 MOOD DISORDER: disorder in which a person undergoes changes in mood that seem inappropriate or extreme -feeling sad over a long period of time for no explainable reason being overly happy, giddy, or energetic for no apparent reason - EX: bipolar disorder Mood Disorders

8 Depression Among Teens Teen years can be difficult * Relationships change and may seem more complicated * Depressed teens may seem moody, angry, hostile, aggressive, irritable * May turn to alcohol or other drugs to "treat" * Can worsen if untreated Warning signs: * Irritable, lack energy, change in sleep patterns, inability to concentrate, blaming others, feeling worthless, indifference to things they used to like, physical problems, thoughts of suicide

9 Schizophrenia SCHIZOPHRENIA: severe mental disorder in which people lose contact with reality May have hallucinations where they hear/see things Often unable to tell the difference between real and imagined things * Common aspect = withdrawal from society

12 Emotional pain can become overwhelming when depression lasts for weeks or months making life seem hopeless SUICIDE: intentional taking of one's own life

13 Causes of Teen Suicide Teens sometimes consider suicide because they cannot handle the pressures they face at home/school * New challenges or responsibilities * Life-changing events (divorce, death, moving) * Alcohol dependency in the family * Domestic violence * Feel disconnected from or rejected by peers

14 Warning Signs of Suicide Teens often share plans openly or drop hints

15 Providing Support Warning signs are often a call for help - they don't really want to die You can provide help/support: talk to the person showing interest in their problems ask if they plan to hurt themselves urge them to share their feelings with an adult NEVER promise to keep suicide plans a secret NEVER assume someone is joking about suicide

16 Dealing with Depression If you find yourself thinking about suicide, remember: suicide is never a solution to depression feelings of depression don't go on forever you are not alone SPAN - Suicide Prevention Action Network Organization that helps teens deal with suicidal thoughts

However, he has offered Larry his skateboard and his best jacket. Should Larry be concerned about Pete?

18 Chapter 4 Lesson 3 Help for Mental & Emotional Disorders Objectives: You will learn to: 1. determine what to do if you or someone you know needs professional help 2. describe the kinds of therapies used to treat mental & emotional disorders 3. identify kinds of professionals who help people with mental health problems VOCABULARY (5) Therapy, Family therapy, Psychologist, Clinical social worker, Psychiatrist

19 What to do if you need help If you have been experiencing these signs, seek help: * feeling sad or angry for 2 weeks or longer * wanting to spend all your time alone * feelings are affecting your sleep, eating, school work, relationships/friendships * feeling "out of control", worried, or nervous all the time Tell an adult how you feel & how long you've felt that way.

20 Kinds of Help Emotional problems often need professional help THERAPY (an approach that teaches you different ways of thinking or behaving) Important because it helps to find the cause of the problem & learn healthy ways to deal with it.

21 Therapy Settings Different therapies depending on the situation Individual - therapist & individual meet alone; often used with people entering therapy for the 1 st time Group - therapist meets with several people with similar problems; group members support each other FAMILY THERAPY: counseling that seeks to improve troubled family relationships

22 Drug Treatment Therapy Work to correct chemical imbalances * Do not treat every problem * Work differently for everyone * Not meant to replace therapy

23 Mental Health Providers Variety of providers to treat different situations PSYCHOLOGIST: mental health professional who is trained & licensed by the state to perform therapy (doctoral degree & specialize in specific areas) CLINICAL SOCIAL WORKER: licensed, certified mental health professional with a master's degree in social work (not specialized; found in some schools) PSYCHIATRIST: medical doctor with a speciality in the treatment of mental health problems in most states, they are the only mental health professionals that can prescribe medicine
