History of Psychology

When there was no such thing as Psychology… Before psychology was a recognized science, these are some of the ways people explained human behavior: (pseudosciences/parasciences)

PHILOSOPHY Asking questions—thinking—why do we blah blah blah? *Difference is that philosophy is NOT a science; uses logic and reasoning, not scientific method Plato Aristotle ancient Greece

23b) Phrenology 1 st to say that functions are localized and that the brain was connected to behavior Predict your future love life! Is he right for you? Do a background check! Is this the Right career Path for you? “BUMP”= overdevelopment “HOLLOW” = underdevelopment I never knew I had an inventive talent until Phrenology told me so. I was a stranger to myself until then! - - -Thomas Alva EDISON

23c) The Four Humors: Blood Chemistry & Behavior Blood; red cheeked; happy, generous, optimistic, flirtatious, irresponsible Phlegm; sluggish, pale, cowardly, unemotional, calm Black bile; sentimental, depressed, Irritable, introspective Yellow Bile; Violent, Short-tempered, ambitious Believed that these humors gave off “vapors” that made it to brain; Perfect health and behavior occurred when none of the humors dominated http://www.passionsandtempers.com/v1/page.php?l=en&p=test https://www.youtube.com/watch?v= Yqoxx-9QJLchttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v= Yqoxx-9QJLc teen temperments

23d) Astrology: use of birth date and the alignment of the planets to determine behavior http://www.astrology-online.com/persn.htm http://www.psychicguild.com/horoscopes_explained.phphttp://www.psychicguild.com/horoscopes_explained.php compatibility stuff on this one http://shine.yahoo.com/astrologyhttp://shine.yahoo.com/astrology daily http://www.fastrology.co.uk/images/fastrology-compatibility-chart.jpghttp://www.fastrology.co.uk/images/fastrology-compatibility-chart.jpg compatability chart

Father of Psychology is… Wilhelm Wundt (VIL-helm VOONT) STRUCTURALISM: wanted to understand behavior by studying the most basic structures or components of human mind (inspired by discovery of chemical elements & development of periodic table) Why? He opened the 1 st laboratory for studying human behavior (1879); the 1 st one to try to make it scientific (1 st to call himself “psychologist”) His method = INTROSPECTION Describe introspection: “looking inside yourself and telling what’s there.” Problem? It’s not objective/scientific enough. Let’s try it ourselves…

An Experience in Introspection Here is a simplified version of how it works: a subject (you) will be exposed to a perceptual or sensory experience (today’s will be sensory). You are required to record your thoughts about it. Put a piece of candy in your mouth but DON’T BITE OR CHEW it until you reach the question that asks you to do so.

1.How does the flavor of the candy affect your taste buds? 2.What happens inside your mouth as you eat the candy? 3.How does the texture of the candy change as its size diminishes? 4.What changes in the flavor when you bite into the candy? 5.What happens to the texture of the candy when you chew it? 6.What happens to your teeth as you chew the candy?

The Necker Cube This is an example of a perceptual experience in introspection. This is an example of a perceptual experience in introspection. The only way we can demonstrate that the Necker cube changes persepective in our minds is by having you look at it and report what you see. Certainly something IS mentally happening to you…The only way we can demonstrate that the Necker cube changes persepective in our minds is by having you look at it and report what you see. 11 Follow-Up Qs 1.Which parts of your analysis were subjective? 2.Which parts of your analysis were objective? 3.Is introspection a valid technique for modern psychology? Why or why not?
