SWBAT Explain the impact of significant technological innovations in World War I such as machine guns, airplanes, tanks, poison gas, and trench warfare

4. Machine Guns Relatively new technology at the beginning of the war.
Many difficulties w/ keeping machine cool.
Still, was nearly impossible to defend resulting in huge numbers of casualties.

5. Vocabulary Terms
Trench warfare a type of combat in which opposing troops fight from trenches facing each other.
Stalemate- a position counting as a draw, in which a player is not in check but cannot move except into check.

7. Airplanes Used as spotters early in the War
Planes were unarmed but pilots would carry handheld weapons
Later in the war, larger planes were created and were able to bomb the enemy.

9. Trench warfare
Form of warfare in which combatants occupy fighting lines, comprised of trenches.
Risk of small arms fire and artillery limited while in the trenches
The area between the opposing trench lines was known as “no mans land”
Resulted in the stalemate on the western front

Early tanks were not reliable, but effective in ending trench warfare

Sometimes used to create a smoke screen to hide attacking soldiers
