1 Pick up an iPad Read the “Emancipation Proclamation” on page R50. Today’s Objectives: Examine Lincoln’s presidency with regards to his political leadership.

2 Read the first two (2) paragraphs on page 529. What rights did Abraham Lincoln believe all African Americans should be entitled? Where did Lincoln say these rights are found? What are these rights called?

3 What it says: All slaves in the CONFEDERACY are now free. Lincoln really didn’t have the authority to do this. Claims slaves are property (Contraband) of the enemy. Lincoln from the beginning never claimed the CONFEDERCY as a foreign, enemy country. It is a WAR MEASURE!! It hurts the South’s ability to use slave labor. Encourages slaves to escape to the UNION. Why Lincoln did it:

9 Read “Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address” on page R50. Focus on the 3 rd paragraph… What do you think Lincoln meant by using these words?
