2 Students will gain an overall understanding of the Civil War and its effects on our country. Students will be able to identify famous people of the Civil War

3 soldier – someone who fought in battle battle – fighting between two sides general – the leader of an army surrender – to give up completely

4 We’ve talked about life as a slave, the underground railroad, and Civil War soldiers. We know the Civil War was fought between two sides, the North and the South. What were the Northern soldiers called? Yankee or Billy Yank What were the Southern soldiers called? Rebels or Johnny Reb Today we will learn more about the men who led these armies during the war

5 There were two POWERFUL Civil War Leaders! Who do you think they were????? Abraham LincolnGeneral Robert E. Lee

6 I was President of the United States! I was elected in 1860. Well, I was the leader of the Army of Northern Virginia. Then I was asked to command the Union forces (north), but I would not fight against Virginia (the south). So, I chose to lead the South (Confederates). I didn’t think countries should leave the Union, but I didn’t think you should hold us together by force either. Well, I believed that I would hold this country together by force. States did not need to secede! We needed to be 1 country - altogether!

7 I opposed slavery and issued the Emancipation Proclamation! The proclamation declared "that all persons held as slaves" within the rebellious states "are, and henceforward shall be free."

8 I also wrote the Gettysburg Address! “I will preserve the government of the people, by the people, for the people.”

9 I had to convince the Southerners to accept that we lost the war. They still wanted to fight. General Lee! We want to keep fighting this war! We can beat the North!

10 There are 3 other people that you need to know about that were important in the Civil War.

11 I was the head of the Union Army. I was an excellent Union General. General Grant, I can’t spare you! You are a fighter!

12 There was actually a president of the Southern States from 1861-1865. What was his name?

13 This Confederate general would bravely face the enemy and look like a stone wall!

16 Clara Barton- A nurse during the Civil War known as the “Angel of the Battlefield.” she later began the American Red Cross. Fredrick Douglass- A slave who escaped to the North in 1838 to become free. Worked with abolitionists to end slavery. Fought for the rights of black soldiers during the war.

17 Review each famous person of the Civil War by adding them to your history journal Label your journals accordingly
