3 Operation Barbarossa  June 22 1941 Germans invade USSR  Attacking with 3.6 million soldiers, largest attacking force in history.  3700 tanks and 2500 planes  Finland, Romania, and Hungary declare war on USSR to augment German attack.  Surprise attack a front of 1900 miles  Easily reach Moscow Gates  Germany seems to be on the way to victory

4 Operation Barbarossa  Blitzkriegs don’t work in Russia  Underestimated Soviet numbers  Industry relocates  Germans lose 800,000 soldiers  Arrival of winter (most severe in years)  No winter clothes or boots  100000 frostbite  Over 2000 amputated  Russians prepared with help of Americans

9 Turning the Tide to the Pacific  Turning point on Midway  Code breakers  Island Hopping  Recapture Philippines, Marianas, and eventually move to Iwo Jima  Nagasaki and Hiroshima
