1 UNIT ASSESSMENT from the SQA ‘Explaining basic computer-aided design/draughting commands, techniques and practice’ Using layout techniques including design elements and principles, and DTP features The promotional document or publication incorporates DTP features that have been applied with high level of skill and significant visual impact The promotional document or publication makes very good use of design principles and elements. Using, for example, colour, contrast, unity, depth, dominance and alignment extended text, alignment, cropping, text wrap, flow text along a path, bleed, transparency, drop shadow, rotate, justification, reverse, columns, gutter, caption, header and footer More than one feature should be applied 1

2 Assessment Standards 2.5Identifying the design principles and elements used to create promotional layouts and displays  DTP principles and common elements can be identified in work which has been produced. This includes given work and work produced by the candidate. Alternatively, this Assessment Standard could be achieved by the candidate completing a written report identifying their own or existing promotional displays — this may include electronic displays, street-liner graphics, banners, labels or other media — and identifying the design principles and elements, and DTP features.’ 3.1Producing single-page displays or layouts that have significant and relevant visual impact and incorporating recognised desktop publishing techniques and including: a main feature, a backdrop and text including heading/title and extended text; consistent and effective use of contrast, harmony, alignment, dominance, unity and depth; and one feature from: cropping, text wrap, flow text along a path, bleed, transparency or drop shadow  Displays or layouts have been produced which have made use of recognised DTP techniques  A display or layout demonstrates relevant visual impact in relation to the context of the activity or task A single page layout does not need to conform to typical A4 or A3 variations, and centres can use evidence from candidates where they have created layouts with different proportions, either for printing or digital displays. Extended text does not require several paragraphs, but could include bullet points or short, relevant, descriptive body text. 2
