2 The Renaissance 14 th - 17 th century in Europe When we think of the Renaissance we may think of Castles, Royalty and knights in shining armor. The word Renaissance means “Rebirth” coming out of the dark. It was a rebirth of: Education, science, art, literature and music.

3 A TAPESTRY is like a very large woven carpet, but it is not meant to go on the floor. These were made to cover the large walls of castles to decorate and to keep the rooms warm, like blankets for the walls.

4 The Unicorn Tapestries are series of tapestries that come from Renaissance period and are some of the most beautiful and complex works of art from this time period. Woven in fine wool and silk with silver and gold threads. Size: 12 feet x 12 feet Show scenes with the hunt or capture of the elusive and magical unicorn. The tapestries were stolen and then found 60 years later being used to cover potatoes. They are now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.

The symbolism was familiar to all, in which animals and plants contained different moral messages for humans, based on traits or behavior.
