WRITING UP FYP REPORT Prabakaran Poopalan Maizatul Zolkapli March 2009

MAJOR SECTIONS OF THE REPORT  FRONT SECTION – The Preliminaries  MIDDLE SECTION – The Main Body and Text  BACK SECTION – Reference Materials

FRONT SECTION: The Preliminaries  Title Page  Approval and Declaration  Acknowledgements  Table of Contents  List of Tables, Figures, and Plates  List of Symbols, Abbreviation and Nomenclature  Abstract

i. Title Page  Logical  Accurate  Descriptive  Grammatically correct Avoid using abbreviations or short forms.

Example of bad report title Thesis Title: “Fan Controller” Suggestion: “Design and fabrication of a fan controller”

Example of bad report title Title: “Automatic classroom” Possible title: “Mathematical modeling and simulation of an automatic classroom.”

WRITING ABSTRACT  Brief explanation of the entire report  Brief exposition of project problems, objectives, approaches and methods used to solve problems  Summary of findings

Example of paper abstract An overview is given on research activities in the field of fluid components or systems built with microfabrication technologies. This review focuses on the fluidic behavior of the various devices, such as valves, pumps and flow sensors, as well as the possibilities and pitfalls related to the modeling of these devices using simple flow theory. Finally, a number of microfluidic systems are described and comments on future trends are given.

Paper Abstract  In this paper the design of thermo- acoustic refrigerators, using the linear thermo-acoustic theory, is described. Due to the large number of parameters, a choice of some parameters along with dimensionless variables will be introduced. The design strategy is a guide for the design and development of thermo- acoustic coolers. Optimization of the different parts are also given.

MIDDLE SECTION: Main Body  Introduction  Literature Review  Research Methodology  Results And Discussion  Conclusion, Future Work And Commercialization Potential (If Any)

i. INTRODUCTION  Background  Rationale  Problem Statement  Objectives  Scope  Limitations  Assumptions

ii. LITERATURE REVIEW Review on previous work relating to:  Research problem: Define, Explain, Justify  Methodology: Define, Explain, Justify  Result: Reliability, Significance, Etc How should it be written:  Critical evaluation of writings directly related to research  Establish what is known or otherwise  Identify areas of controversy  Formulate questions for further research

WHY DO WE NEED LR? To find out knowledge and ideas that are already established on a topic, including the strengths and weaknesses. [To Define, Explain, Justify Decisions On Starting Research]

iii. RESEARCH METHODOLOGY  Experimental Setup  Design/Development Of Mathematical Model  Simulation And Analysis  Destructive Analysis

iv. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION  Analysis and presentation of data

v. CONCLUSION  Interpret the results of the study  Stressing the significance, implications and limitations of the findings

BACK SECTION: Reference Materials  References/ Bibliography  Appendices

i. REFERENCES Due acknowledgement must be given to all Ideas, Concepts, Texts, Data, Results that are not your own and must be included in the reference list  Quote: Use Exact Words  Paraphrase: Use Ideas In Different Words  Summaries: Use Main Points

Thank you
