Training/Development/Certification for Snowsport Scotland’s Competition Volunteers and Officials Using E-Learning

Competition is clearly a route to increasing and retaining participation in sport. At the same time, the safety of competitors as well as their enjoyment of the experience is a priority. With this comes a need to ensure the development of event officials and volunteers keeps pace with the increasing scrutiny they come under from athletes, their families, compliance enforcers, and, critically, their insurers. The Future

E-Learning for Snowsport Scotland Officials The Sports Officials Learning & Development proposition is an online/ web- based service/platform through which the Snowsport Scotland could: Train and develop its Officials on their chosen pathway using e-learning (as part of a blended learning approach) Assess and affect their development progress online Identify the most talented people online Provide a communications/intranet service to groups of learners who may be geographically dispersed and/or have different day to day schedules; Deliver the majority of learning and development to individuals or groups without them having to convene in one place at a prescribed date and time. Make Officials’ development more accessible

E-Learning for Snowsport Scotland Officials Fast track to experience through: - Individuals taking ownership of their development - The more they learn, the more competent they become Easy access to enhancing their knowledge of Competition laws/rules – including updates. Particularly useful in a sport with a wide range of disciplines Members’ on-line community – sharing ideas and best practice Online logbook of experience, development activity, video logs etc Generic learning and development modules (as well as sport specific exercises) for those who are keen.

Benefits for Snowpsort Scotland Efficient solution to training, tracking progress and enhancing the development of Officials in all disciplines Cost efficient – no travel to events and presentations, development of e-learning materials a one-off cost Initial investment in materials available to future Officials and Volunteers on the pathway Efficient execution of learning and development for pathways will drive standards up as more take part and their performance/learning can be monitored effectively and efficiently.

Officials or Volunteers ‘join up’ as a member Access to e-learning is via the website – members log in with the details they are given on sign up. To gain qualification(s) members complete the specific Snowsports discipline’s learning modules online: a combination of answering questions, often multiple choice related to video clips and/or making judgements on race or event scenarios No pass or fail – keep going until it is correct Can download and populate a logbook if desired (with videos and text) All participation in sport specific and generic modules recorded Assessors can have access to Umpires logbooks and learning record Certificates awarded What to expect

How does it work The Learning Zone page becomes a Snowsport Scotland branded microsite Snowsport Scotlandg works with SOUK consultants to produce modules on the various parts of the pathway More experienced Officials may be ‘grandfathered’ in at an appropriate level – but they must affiliate so their learning and development can be evidenced We suggest ALL Officials should take the generic modules to help them become attuned to the e-learning environment (as it is the way forward) Talent ID may be put in place to aid selection of elite Link to existing BSS website
