5 Bill Reid Bill Reid (1920-1998), an acclaimed Haida master goldsmith, carver, sculptor, writer and spokesman, was one of Canada's greatest artists. Born to a Haida mother and a European father. He combined European jewelry techniques with the Haida art tradition.

6 Bill Reid’s Work Famous works include: “The Raven and the First Men” “The Spirit of Haida Gwaii” “Lootaas” Reid created over 1500 works over his long career Bill Reid was a pivotal force in introducing to the world the great art traditions of the indigenous people of the Northwest Coast.

11 Create your Own Totem Steps: Recall as many details as you can about your family's history. Decide which symbols you are going to use to represent different elements of your family history. Think about including totems other than people and animals (for example a type of food or national flag). Select four to five symbols. Experiment with stacking the pictures in different ways to form a totem pole that tells the story of your family in the way and order you want to tell it. Hand in your totem pole illustration and an explanation of what each symbol means.
