3 Burnside sends wave after wave up hill– slaughter, 20 th Maine trapped, Irish brigade against Irish North never takes the hill, Burnside fired

4 Chancellorsville– just west F-Burg, Lee & Jackson divide their troops, attack two sides Hooker now in charge of north, knocked out by cannonball Total victory for South, Stonewall shot accidentally by own men

6 Gettysburg Lee gets cocky from easy victories, wants to invade North to end war Hooker fired and Meade takes over North Armies meet by accident near Gettysburg, PA Becomes a 3 day battle

7 G-Burg Day One Northern cavalry holds off larger southern force to keep high ground until infantry arrives N. cavalry led by Buford

8 G-Burg Day Two Large scale fighting on the flanks– sides of army Chamberlain and 20 th Maine hold Little Round Top, run out of ammo, bayonet charge Both sides rest for the night, N wins the day

9 G-Burg Day Three Lee thinks a massive charge at the middle will work, Longstreet argues against Major artillery attack to start Pickett’s division sent across, 13,000 men, Armistead leads a charge, over half are casualties– Pickett’s Charge Lee forced to retreat, Meade doesn’t finish them off Lincoln gives the Gettysburg Address

11 Vicksburg Month long siege of Vicksburg, MS, about same time as G-Burg Grant surrounds city, trenches, games, prairie dog village—caves, constant artillery, residents eat anything Finally surrenders and North has Miss River

13 Grant Takes Over After G-Burg, Meade appointed to desk job in DC, Grant in charge after he takes V- Burg Grant’s plan is to force Lee south to Richmond while Sherman marches north to meet him from Atlanta

14 The Wilderness and Cold Harbor Very thick woods around Chancellorsville known as the Wilderness Fighting very close for days, confusion, fires, Grant loses thousands of men but keeps pushing south

15 After Grant wins at Spotsylvania, armies meet at crossroads called Cold Harbor 6,000 Union troops killed in first 8 minutes Two armies stare at each other for 2 days, no truce to collect wounded, one slits own throat

17 Petersburg Petersburg-- just south of Richmond, Grant wants to take it and cut off south capital Siege that last 9 months, lines stretch out 53 miles, tempt southerners with food Battle of the Crater, Burnside, tunnel, TNT, huge hole blown in south’s defenses, more northerners killed though

19 Total War While P-Burg goes on, Sherman takes Atlanta Marches from the city to Savannah on the coast, spreads army out for miles, destroys everything in path

21 The South Surrenders Lee runs out of food and supplies, retreats from P-burg, Richmond falls the same day Lee moves west but is soon surrounded at town called Appomattox Courthouse

22 Lee surrenders to Grant, Grant allows south to keep side arms and horses, orders them to be fed Other part of south’s army surrenders to Sherman in NC War is over with more than 600,000 killed
