3. 1. The Heart of Man Is Self-Serving What do we learn about the makeup of the people in this passage? Is there anything inherently wrong with building cities or towers? Why was their desire to do these things a bad thing? In verse 3, the people decided to make bricks to build a city and tower. What does this tell us about the knowledge and abilities of early humankind?

4. 1. The Heart of Man Is Self-Serving The people used the knowledge God had given them to defy Him. How do people do the same thing today—how do people use God’s gifts to defy Him? In verse 4, the people did not want to be dispersed over the earth. How was this in direct disobedience to God? See Genesis 9:1.

6. 2. God’s Approach May Seem Chaotic What does it mean that the Lord “came down”? Share some instances when God has gotten your attention. Why do you think God wanted to stop the building of this tower?

7. 2. God’s Approach May Seem Chaotic Can you think of other instances when God did something “mean” according to our perspective, but it turns out He was doing what was best? How do we justify the fact that God “confused” their languages when 1 Corinthians 14:33 plainly teaches that God is not the author of confusion?

8. 2. God’s Approach May Seem Chaotic What is something going on in your life that seems “confusing”? How might knowing that God understands what is going on help you to trust Him? What difference does it make that we have an all-knowing God who understands everything?

9. 3. God’s Will Is Non-Negotiable How did the confusion of languages cause the people to stop building? If there is nothing wrong with building in general, why was their building project wrong? What are some things in our lives that are not necessarily wrong, but may be wrong for us because we are in disobedience to God?

10. 3. God’s Will Is Non-Negotiable How can we discern what is wrong, good, and best? How did God ultimately accomplish His purpose? Explain how God did not usurp humankind’s free will when He dispersed them by confusing their language. In what ways might God go about accomplishing His will today?
