Background Information  Located off Alvaston bypass, Derby  Site is 73 Hectares  Situated next to river Derwent, complicated groundwater flows  Underlying aquifer  Site previously occupied by Acetate Products LTD Uses include: Chemical Storage, disposal of waste by-products and production of acetate  Site currently owned by Rosemound Developments LTD  Future site uses include: Derby Commercial Park ○ Units for Business use ○ Industrial Storage Alex Walton, Josh Bush2

Site Investigation  Previous investigative records White Young Green Environmental Environmental Resource Management Environment Agency  5 main contaminated areas identified for intense treatment Extra investigation in these areas  Trial Pits every 25m in main contamination zones Every 50m outside of main contamination zones  Sampling in trial pits for contaminant identification 3

Site Pollution  Many contaminants found, four major contaminants identified for remediation works TCE – Trichloroethene cDCE – Dichloroethene VC – Vinyl Chloride Benzene  Target concentrations set by Environment Agency for end use Alex Walton, Josh Bush4

Methods of soil Remediation  2 types of Remediation In-situ ○ In-situ chemical Oxidation ○ Multiphase Extraction ○ Air Sparging Ex-situ ○ Screening ○ Biopiles Alex Walton, Josh Bush5

In-Situ Remediation  Chemical Oxidation Potassium Permanganate injected into the ground, oxidises contaminants ○ VC, TCE, DCE  Air Sparging Pump air into groundwater, contaminants removed by contact with air. Contaminants carried up to the non saturated soil zone  Multi phase Extraction (MPE) Treats off-gas of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC), Benzene, non aqueous phase liquids (NAPL), contaminants in unsaturated from air sparging Positively charged ions in carbon remove negative ions in the water (contaminants) Alex Walton, Josh Bush6

Ex-Situ Remediation  Soil excavated and screened  Contaminated surface soil is excavated and placed on impermeable layer, then covered  Biopiles require Leachate collection system Control of ○ Temperature ○ Moisture ○ PH ○ Nutrients and oxygen levels  Treats petroleum based contaminants and VOC’s Alex Walton, Josh Bush7

Result  21 tonnes of potassium permanganate injected 15.6t in the intensive treatment areas 4.4t in adjacent areas 1t in further treatment  2.3 tonnes of Hydrocarbons recovered via MPE  10,000m 3 of soil excavated for bioremediation  All remedial targets met or exceeded.  Site now safe for commercial/industrial development Alex Walton, Josh Bush8
