2 Terms to know: Prose: fiction/nonfiction texts in paragraphs Poetry: use of extremely concise, musical, and emotionally charged language in lines and stanzas Sensory Language Figurative Language Sound Devices

3 Imagery Definition: word pictures or descriptions that appeal to five senses (sensory language) Diction is important in creating imagery Imagery helps reader visualize setting

4 Symbolism Use of a symbol in a poem or piece of prose Can be universal o 4 leaf clover=luck o Liberty Bell=freedom Can be specific to certain text

5 Figurative Language Simile: comparison using like or as Metaphor: comparison without like or as o Direct Metaphor: stated directly o Implied Metaphor: not stated directly o Extended Metaphor: used repeatedly throughout work Personification: human characteristics to nonhuman objects Hyperbole: extreme exaggeration Analogy: comparison used to increase understanding

6 Sound Devices Rhyme: repeated sound at end of words o Rhyme Scheme: pattern of rhymes in poem o End Rhyme: repeated sound at the end of lines o Internal Rhyme: repeated sound within a line Alliteration: repetition of consonant sound at the beginning of a word Consonance: repetition of consonant sounds at the end of words Assonance: repetition of vowel sounds in words

7 Sound Devices Continued Rhythm: rise and fall in intensity of sounds Meter: rhythmic pattern Iamb: da-DUM (soft to strong stresses) o Identify by scanning and placing accent marks o Weak and strong stresses divided by vertical lines o Foot: group of stresses between lines o Iambic Pentameter: 5 feet

8 Speaker Be aware of speaker (imaginary voice that is speaking in the poem) Questions to Consider o Who is the speaker? o How does he, she, it feel? o What subject is the speaker talking about? o What is the tone? How does it change? o How does diction impact tone? o Is the speaker doing anything? If so, what?

9 Forms of Poetry Narrative: tells a story o Epic: long narrative poem o Ballad: songlike narrative poem, short stanzas and refrain Dramatic: story using character's own thoughts or spoken statements Lyric: feelings of single speaker o Elegy: poem of mourning Free Verse: no set rhyme or rhythm Concrete: shaped like subject Sonnet: 14 line poem in iambic pentameter with set rhyme scheme
