3 What is a product? Something that is created by the project A tangible item that is created – a machine, an application, a document An intangible item that is created – a cultural change, an organisational structure Two types of products – Specialist products The products that are created for the customer – Management products Reports, plans, documents created to manage the project

4 Product Breakdown Structure Product Breakdown Structure is a hierarchal chart that shows the products that will be created in the project The product at the top of the hierarchy is the final product, the outcome of the project, stage or work package – The level below decomposes the final product into its major components – Each level below decomposes the product above into sub- components – Products at the lowest level can’t be broken down any further The team works on the product breakdown and comes to agreement on the structure

6 Product Descriptions Ensures that all team members have the same clear understanding of what the product is Baseline the product description as it may change during the project Explains the quality requirements of the product Includes checklists for development of the product Written by the Project Manager with the help of specialists and users Contains: – Purpose, composition, derivation, format and presentation, quality criteria, quality method, people or skills required

7 Product Flow Diagram Show the sequence of developing the products Shows dependencies between the products Shows dependencies on external products

8 Product Checklist A table which shows all the products of a plan with columns for planned and actual dates Planned dates are added after scheduling Actual dates are added as they are achieved

9 Fundamentals A product is something that the project creates There are specialist products and management products The Product Breakdown Structure shows how the major products are decomposed into their components The Product Breakdown Structure has more than one level Product Descriptions ensure that everyone has a common understanding of what the product is Product Descriptions specify the quality required for the product Product Flow Diagram show the sequence or the order in which the products are created Product Checklist shows the products of a plan with their planned and actual completion dates
