2. I KNOW my love is true, And oh the day is fair. 4.  Iambic : Each foot has one stressed and one unstressed syllable.  Triameter: Each line has 3 feet. ~ / ~ / ~ / The air ♥ I breathe ♥ is rare, ~ / ~ / ~ / I have ♥ no grief ♥ or care; ~ / ~ / ~ / For my ♥ own love ♥ is true, ~ / ~ / ~ / And oh ♥ the day ♥ is fair.

5.  The theme of the poem is love, and its affect on ones emotional perspective. I KNOW my love is true, And oh the day is fair. ♥ My love is false I find, And oh the day is dark.

6.  The sun (or light) is used to symbolize feelings of love. She lives and all is bright, She dies and life is night.

9. Message: When love is true, it causes a positive outlook and bright disposition. When love fails, it causes feelings of despair, and a dark viewpoint. Love has the power to change your perspective.

10.  Paul Laurence Dunbar was the first African American to gain national eminence as a poet. Born in 1872 in Dayton, Ohio, he was the son of ex-slaves and classmate to Orville Wright of aviation fame.  Dunbar was prolific, writing short stories, novels, librettos, plays, songs and essays as well as the poetry for which he became well known. He was popular with black and white readers of his day, and his works are celebrated today by scholars and school children alike.  His style encompasses two distinct voices - the standard English of the classical poet and the evocative dialect of the turn- of-the-century black community in America.

12. Happy and free Sunny and bright Eyes twinkling like stars in the dark summer night. A laugh so big A smile so wide The joy that he shared with us came from inside. Although he is gone And time has gone by I still see his eyes in the dark summer sky.
