2 Monday, October 5, 2009 Objectives: Students will be able to identify and explain the parts and functions of the brain. Opener: Explain everything you remember about the Brain. Activities: 1)Complete Opener. Copy Homework. 2)Neuron Activity 3)Notes on The Brain Homework: Study notes on the Nervous system and on The Brain. “Test” tomorrow.

3 Facts About the Human Brain It’s the center of the nervous. The brain is located in the head and protected by the skull. It’s average weight is about 1300-1400 grams. It’s about 75% water. The brain consists of about 100 billion neurons.

4 Three Sections of the Brain Hindbrain: medulla (vital functions), pons (body movement, attention, sleep, alertness), cerebellum (balance and coordination Midbrain: vision and hearing

5 Sections of the Brain Forebrain –Thalmus (sensory info from eyes and ears) –Hypothalmus (body temperature, storing nutrients, hunger, thirst, caring for offspring, aggression, sexual behavior) –Limbic (learning, memory, emotion, hunger, sex aggression) –Cerebrum (what makes humans different!)/Cerebral Cortex

6 Cerebral Cortex/Cerebellum Thinking Memory Language Emotions Complex motor functions perception

7 Cerebral Cortex Frontal Lobe (motor) Parietal Lobe (sensory) Occipital Lobe (visual) Temporal Lobe (hearing) Right-Brain/Left-Brain – might dominate processing of certain functions, but don’t function independently. Controls opposite side of the body.

9 Tuesday, October 6, 2009 Objectives: Students will be able to analyze the nervous system by identifying the areas that will be affected in specific scenarios. Opener: List and define 5 vocabulary words from the nervous system. Activities: 1)Complete opener. 2)Copy homework. 3)Complete notes on the brain. 4)Do Nervous System Assessment Homework: Work on Assessment.

10 Wednesday, October 7, 2009 Objectives: Students will be able to analyze the nervous system by identifying areas of interaction. Opener: What is one thing that now makes sense to you after doing the activity yesterday? What is one thing about which you are still confused? Activities: 1)Complete opener. Copy homework. 2)Complete Assessment – turn in by the end of the period. 3)Read handout on psychological disorders. Answer “think about it question” on case study. Answer questions at the end. Homework: Finish #3 above.

11 Thursday, October 8, 2009 Objectives: Students will be able to analyze major psychological disorders by identifying symptoms and biological and psychological explanations. Opener: Write what you know about depression, bipolar depression, post traumatic stress disorder and schizophrenia. Activities: 1)Complete Opener. 2)Copy Homework. 3)Symptoms of Psychological Disorders Homework: Pick 3 of the psychological disorders that we discussed today. What do you THINK explains why those disorders happen?
