What is a modifier? Adjectives, adverbs & prepositional phrases Tell more about other words in a sentence Usually found close to the words they modify Adjective phrases: come RIGHT AFTER the word they modify Adverb phrases: come RIGHT AFTER the verb or at the BEGINNING of a sentence SPECIAL WORD only If you use the word only, place it directly before the word it modifies He only ate oysters. (He did nothing else but eat)

3 Adverb Modifiers Reminder: An adverb is a word that modifies a verb (how, when, where) We always visit the beach. When do we visit the beach? ALWAYS A wave crashed very loudly. How loudly did the wave crash? VERY

4 Adjective Modifier Reminder: an adjective describes a noun
I love the warm sun. What is the sun? WARM I see a tiny jellyfish! What is the jellyfish? TINY

5 Prepositional Phrase Reminder: A prepositional phrase is a phrase (group of words) beginning with a preposition. Prepositions: in, as, down, under, beneath, beside, through, with I see a tiny jellyfish! One stung me on the foot. Where did the jellyfish sting you? ON THE FOOT The police searched throughout the apartment for the escaped criminal. Where did the police search? THROUGHOUT THE APARTMENT

6 Prepositional Phrase A prepositional phrase can also act as adverbs and adjectives Adverb Phrase: appear RIGHT AFTER a verb or at the BEGINNING of a sentence Adjective Phrase: come RIGHT AFTER the word they modify (or change) ADVERB PHRASE The crab ran under the rock. Where did the crab run? UNDER THE ROCK ADJECTIVE PHRASE The towel with green stripes is mine. Which towel is yours? WITH GREEN STRIPES

TO THE PARK For breakfast, Andrew likes bananas with strawberries. FOR BREAKFAST

Is the prepositional phrase an adverb or adjective phrase? Near my house is a beautiful sand beach. adverb Several members of my family jog on the wet sand. adjective, adverb A sign with big red letters says, “Swim at your own risk.” People of all ages fish and relax on the pier.

Seagulls with broad wings flap and dive along the long sandy coastline. By late afternoon, most of the people have left the beach. Sunsets of beautiful reds and oranges bring an end to many peaceful days.
