HOW TO MAKE THEM MORE EFFICIENT AND ENJOYABLE One-to-one courses

Feelings How long have you been teaching one-to-ones? Do you like them? What words describe best your feelings about one-to-ones?

What are the advantages and disadvantages for students Advantages The classes are tailor made. Less time constraints. Constant attention of the teacher. The student is always working with a good ‘model’ Students’ contribution is more relevant. No competition of other students for the teacher’s time. Learner training. Amount and type of input can be maximized by the teacher to benefit the student.

Disadvantages Exhaustion. Lack of comparison with other students. Lack of individual study time during the class. Monotonous lesson format.

What are the advantages and disadvantages for teachers Advantages Only one level - This means no mixed abilities or fast finishers to deal with. Material can be supplied by the student. We as teachers can learn something too. Students can teach us about their interests, work and experiences. We can select material we are sure will interest and motivate the student. There are fewer time constraints. (address student’s needs, explore areas of personal interest). Classroom management is not an issue. Less preparation in terms of photocopying, marking compositions, etc..

Disadvantages The teacher is always “on”. The role of ‘counselor’ can be stressful. Student/ teacher personality differences. Punctuality / cancelations / recuperar clases Interruptions (especially In-Company) “High achievers” who don’t like being told what to do or being corrected. Possible absence of syllabus (record and show progress to the student). Reading and writing in class = “waste of time”? Notes for correction without distracting the student. Limited range of activities. Class content dissipation / teacher becomes the student’s English secretary.

Tips to overcome disadvantages Needs analysis Learner training Clear goals Monotomy is the enemy Take time out of class Share with other teachers

Top ten tips to minimize disadvantages 1. ??? Yours ??? 2. Give them what they need. 3. Learner training. 4. Set clear goals. Keep track of what you do. 5. Combat monotony. 6. Take time out. 7. Take notes openly. 8. Be ‘Student B’ and take part in pair work activities. 9. Teach the person not the material. 10. Share with other teachers.

A few (practical) things to bear in mind: You’re not top priority. Nothing personal Let things flow vs control things. No pressure on homework (or no homework at all). Get (and give) clear information on rules (UAB has a clear policy on cancelation and recuperation)
