6 ADMIN-FACILITATED LIF DAY UPDATE What’s the update? Because we have such a large staff, communicating with – and finding – each other can sometimes be tricky. By the preceding Thursday afternoon, we’re asking that each department chair sends the admin team the list of: 1)Which teams are meeting? 2)Who is planning on attending with that team? 3)Where will the teams be located?

7 ADMIN-FACILITATED LIF DAY UPDATE What’s the update? Agenda and Minutes – important content clarification: In advance, 1)Teams will decide on SIP actions to progress with 2)Agenda and notes of minutes need to be connected with this/these SIP actions

8 PREVIEW OF TRAINING COMING… SOS SIGNS OF SUICIDE

9 WHY? House Bill 1336 passed: Each school district must adopt a plan for recognition, initial screening, and response to emotional or behavioral distress in students, including but not limited to indicators of possible substance abuse, violence, and youth suicide. c) how staff should respond to suspicions, concerns, or warning signs of emotional or behavioral distress in students f) how staff should respond to a crisis situation where a student is in imminent danger to himself or herself or others.

10 OSPI--SOS Developed a model plan that schools could use to build their individual plans. Everett has adopted the SOS Signs of Suicide curriculum. Final plans and procedures will be finalized soon.

11 WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR US? Staff training will occur in the next few months Health teachers will be using this curriculum to supplement what they are already doing in their classes We will probably do some kind of pilot this spring

12 OVERVIEW RUN, HIDE, FIGHT

13 WHY RUN, HIDE, FIGHT Follows the best practices set forth by Homeland Security, FBI and DHS Provides the best chance of surviving a school shooting Takes an active stance towards student safety

14 RUN If students are in the hallway and they have easy, unblocked access to the outside, they should exit the building. If teachers have students in class, they should look for a way to exit the building, IF IT IS SAFE TO DO SO!!!!!! Teachers that do not have students in class should look to exit the building, IF SAFE TO DO SO, and should escort any students they come across outside.

15 If you cannot safely get to an exit, hide in the nearest room. Lock and barricade the door with anything possible Cover windows if applicable Look for any means of exit Look for objects that can be used in self-defense Stay as small and as quiet as possible HIDE

16 If you are unable to escape, and the assailant is able to get into your room, fight with anything possible Most assailants are looking for quick and easy targets Teachers could be the first ones to encounter the assailant FIGHT

17 ALWAYS REMEMBER… The students are the most important consideration Their safety should come first, no matter what We will not be able to save everyone, do not sacrifice an entire class for one student Be aware of your surroundings, always plan for the worst, and always have a back-up plan
