AIAA Corporate Status Non-profit under IRS Code 501 c(3) Formed for Educational or Scientific Purposes Limited Lobbying Permitted Non-profit Postal Rates No Corporate Income Tax Notes: AIAA is a non-profit corporation, incorporated in the state of New York. We qualify as a non-profit under IRS code 501 c(3), which covers educational and scientific organizations. We are allowed to conduct only limited amounts of lobbying (5% of revenue), but since our primary purpose is the archiving and distribution of scientific knowledge, we usually don’t come close to the limit. We are able to take advantage of non-profit postal rates, an important savings on mailing the magazine. We do not pay Federal or State Corporate Income Tax, but we do pay most other taxes including Real Estate, personal property, sales taxes, employer social security taxes, etc. Contributions to AIAA or the Foundation for which the individual does not receive a direct benefit do qualify as tax deductible, depending on the individuals situation.

Retention rate - 78%. Retention of those that receive a complimentary membership from conferences is very low. Student to Professional Upgrade retention is improving. Region & Section Activities Committee (RSAC)
AIAA Board of Directors Vice President–Member Services Region Directors Vice President–Member Services Region Directors, Deputies, Liaisons Region & Section Activities (RSAC) Region Director Region Deputy Directors Section RAC Representatives Region Activities Committee RSAC is the acronym for the Region And Section Activities Committee. The VP_Member Services serves as Chair of the RSAC and advises the Board on policy matters pertaining to Regions, Sections, Member Services, Career Enhancement, Young Professionals activities of the Institute....and coordinates plans for the continued growth and welfare of the Sections and the members. Starting from the bottom- the Sections circle: Sections gather information about events, successes/lessons learned, local issues, or concerns. The Section Chair or RAC Rep brings this information to the quarterly RAC meetings (2nd circle). There, the Regional Director, Deputy Directors, and Section reps within the Region discuss their reports. The Regional Directors present this information at the RSAC meeting (held Jan, May and Aug). If any of these items need to be presented to the AIAA President and other Board members, the VP-Member Services will discuss this during the BOD meeting (also held in Jan, May and Aug). Membership Committee Chair appointed by VP Member Services Develops and recommends policies and procedures concerning membership grades applications, recruitment and retention Consists of Regional Deputy Directors, liaisons from standing committees, and members at large Every two years forms ad hoc committee to review dues The Membership Committee Chair is appointed by the Vice President Member Services. The Committee consists of Regional Deputy Directors, Liaisons from other Standing Committees, and Members At Large. The Membership Committee meets face-to-face one or two times a year and has two or three teleconferences each year. Usually meet in conjunction with a major conference and board of directors meetings (usually January and August.) Every two years the Committee forms an Ad Hoc Committee to review the dues. Identifies those practitioners in the arts and sciences who have made notable and significant contributions, and honors in public ceremony those so identified with symbols of acclaim and esteem. Public Policy Committee (PPC)
Chaired by the VP of Public Policy Provides AIAA liaison to the Legislative and Executive Branches Is responsible for AIAA congressional testimony Jointly approves AIAA position papers with TAC Sponsors Congressional Visits Day, August is for Aerospace, and Region Public Policy Colloquium Five domain PPC policy subcommittees Aeronautics, astronautics/space, national security, Energy & Environment, and workforce & education Identify and pursue key issues (through white papers, roundtables & panel sessions, workshops, etc.) Why is the AIAA active in public policy? Emerging Technologies Committee (ETC)
Chair appointed by AIAA President The Scope of the ETC is to identify both new and expanding technologies and programs that have the potential for significant AIAA involvement, to identify champions for new AIAA activities, and to identify products and services that AIAA could provide to support new emerging initiatives. ETC serves as the home of the AIAA’s Small Business Initiative ETC meets face-to-face three times per year. The committee reviews each subcommittee’s current “Watch List” and makes recommendations. Young Professional Committee (YPC)
The AIAA Young Professional Committee (YPC) serves all professionals, age 35 and under whom are working in the Academic, Government or Industry segments of the Aerospace field. Work with the AIAA committees to enhance opportunities for young professional participation throughout the Institute. Ease the transition from university student members to the work force through specific programs designed to create professional awareness. YP Aerospace Handbook- written by the YPC for college students who are contemplating a career in the aerospace industry. It serves as an ongoing resource to students, providing information on how to prepare for - and what to expect from - a career in aerospace YP Online Guide for Gaining Management Support - information gathered by the YPC that takes an AIAA member through the process of requesting funds for conferences by providing a template memo for requesting conference funds from management, executive advice on how to get management buy- in, examples of trip reports, and a list of tangible benefits to help you convince your manager to approve funding. YPC organizes YP events at major conferences.

Our Mission: to support the future aerospace professional, practicing aerospace professionals, and the organizations and institutions involved in aerospace. Congressional Visits Day
AIAA’s annual member-driven policy outreach activity to Congress and the Executive Branch. Allows CVD participants to converse with key decision makers in Congress on the matters that mean the most to AIAA. Visit teams are organized by state or Technical Committee (TC) discipline. PPC allocates some funding for a set number of CVD participants. AIAA is well-positioned to communicate matters of aerospace policy and critical technical issues in an objective and effective manner. AIAA’s newest grassroots program, August is for Aerospace (A4A) allows members to continue the discussions they started at CVD by encouraging interaction between members and elected officials during their August recess. A4A helps display the local impact of the aerospace sector on lawmaker’s communities, increasing the effectiveness of the messages delivered at CVD. Each year, nearly 150 AIAA members from across the United States travel to Washington to educate Congress and the Administration on the importance of the aerospace industry to our country. AIAA strongly believes that because of our long history as the principle aerospace professionals society and its unique membership structure, the Institute is educating Congress on critical aerospace issues vital to our country’s economic competitiveness. CVD is an opportunity for aerospace engineers and scientists to communicate their technical expertise to policymakers on issues that are of critical importance.

Congressional Visits Day
Each year, at least 150 AIAA members from across the United States travel to Washington, D.C. to educate Congress and the Administration on the importance of the aerospace industry to our country’s national and economic security. CVD provides aerospace engineers and scientists with an opportunity to offer their technical expertise to policymakers on a wide range of issue which are critically important to our nation. Speaker Expense Reimbursement & Distinguished Lecture Program
Available to the Sections and Student Branches. A Section may have up to two speakers per year and a Student Branch may have one speaker per year, as long as funds are available. The program year runs from October 1 – September 30. The speaker(s) may come from the DL List or may be sought out by Section/Branch. The speaker’s expenses can be reimbursed through the program. Speaker Expense Reimbursement & Distinguished Lecture Program
Program allows Student Branches and Professional Sections the opportunity to arrange for a speaker of their choice for a Branch and Section event. The AIAA will cover reasonable speaker travel expenses, provided the Branch or Section adheres to the guidelines and procedures. Section or Branch contacts the speaker they would like to invite and agree upon a tentative date and time. Section or Branch obtains authorization from the AIAA Program Administrator before the speaker is confirmed. After confirmation from AIAA Program Administrator the Section or Student Branch confirms the speaker’s invitation by letter and copies AIAA Program Administrator. The letter of invitation must include a paragraph stating the following: “The AIAA will be pleased to reimburse you for reasonable travel expenses including airfare, hotel room night charges, meals, rental cars, parking expenses both at the hotel and departure airport, and other associated expenses related to your travel to the engagement. AIAA does not pay per diem or honoraria.
