2 When did the war take place?
On December 20, 1860, South Carolina secedes from the Union. War begins April 12, 1861 – Confederates fire on Fort Sumter, SC War ends on April 9, 1865 – General Robert E. Lee surrenders to General Ulysses Grant at Appomattox.

3 Who was involved? Confederacy – Southern states.
President: Jefferson Davis Generals: Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson, J.E.B. Stuart, and James Longstreet Union – Northern states. President: Abraham Lincoln Generals: George McClellan, Ambrose Burnside, Joseph Hooker, William Sherman, and Ulysses S. Grant

4 Where did the war take place?
Most battles took place in Virginia. Battles took place in southern states. Along the Mississippi River. Naval Battles - Atlantic coast and Gulf of Mexico.

5 Why did the war take place?
Slavery States rights – Power should be in the hands of the states (people). Economic differences between the North and the South. Antebellum Events.

6 What were the results of the war?
The Union is preserved Abolition of Slavery South is devastated Reconstruction of the south Growth of industry in the south Federal Government becomes more powerful.
