3 American Revolution – Attack on Quebec New Year’s Eve, 1775
In 1775, armed conflict – USA independent of Britain 13 Colonies thought that the Canadiens in Quebec would rebel with them George Washington (first president) tried to convince them to join Attacked Quebec (General Montgomery takes Montreal; General Arnold and men suffer from starvation, disease, and desertion) 200 US men killed; 6 British men killed – American retreat

More detail on areas that were to become Canada and the U.S.A. as separate countries Patriots (Rebels) Loyal to the 13 colonies; wanted to separate from Britain to form US Tories (Loyalists) Loyal to Britain; did NOT want to separate from Britain; most went to Quebec and Nova Scotia

5 LOYALITY With a partner, define the word LOYAL

7 After the American Revolution two groups emerged:
Loyalists(Tories) Loyal to Britain and did not want to separate. These people lived in or moved to the British North American colonies of Quebec, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, St. John Island (P.E.I.), Cape Breton Island, or Newfoundland. Patriots (Rebels) – Loyal to the 13 Colonies and wanted to separate from Britain to form their own country  The United States of America. These people lived in or moved to the 13 Colonies.

8 Refugees A person who leaves their home or country to look for safety elsewhere. From 1776 to 1786 many loyalists left the 13 American colonies for the British Colonies of Quebec and Nova Scotia. Who were they LOYAL to? Why do you think the Tories left the Patriots?

9 Persecution Many Loyalists who lived in the 13 Colonies had their homes taken away and their businesses destroyed by the Patriots. Some were tarred and feathered if they refused to move to BNA. The Patriots persecuted the Loyalists because they had different political beliefs.
