Thematic Focus Unit 1 In Unit 1, students will read selections which explore various ways in which people, relationships, places, and societies change over time. This unit contains 2 parts, and selections in both parts contribute to the unit theme by examining how a variety of characters are affected by great changes in their lives. Selections in Part 1 (The Price of Progress) emphasize the effects of technological progress on characters in a number of settings. Selections in Part 2 (Cultural Crossroads) emphasize the changes in individuals and their relationships that are caused by cultural differences.

adjective clause: s.c. used as adjective starts with relative pronoun that, who, whom, whose, which or relative adverb where, when, why Examples (do not copy): Willy Higinbotham is the scientist who invented the first computer game. It was he who developed computer tennis. Have you seen the computer that Higinbotham used? Have you seen the desk where Higinbotham sat?

essential/restrictive clauses provide information necessary to identify noun/pronoun not set off with commas nonessential/nonrestrictive clauses add extra info about noun/pronoun whose meaning is already clear is set off with commas Examples (do not copy): Tourists can visit the laboratory that employed Higinbotham.
