1 Essential Question: What are chemical vs physical properties?
Warm-up 9/12/11 List 5 physical and chemical properties or changes? To do

2 Essential Question: What are pennies made of
Essential Question: What are pennies made of? How can we use density to help us find out? Select 10 pennies from each container and make sure to separate and before.

3 Penny Lab 1) Select 10 Pre-82 pennies and 10 ‘83 and newer
2) Determine the density of each set of pennies. You can use either method to determine volume. 3) Find the metal on page R-47 through R-49 Make sure it sounds like a reasonable metal 4) What other physical or chemical properties could we use to make the final distinction

4 Warm-up 9/13/11 Get out labs, finish if you have not Turning in today!! Staple table, then calculations, the graph. To do

5 Density Problems If 23.6 grams of a substance has a volume of 8.7 mL, what is the substance? How do I know how to round it off? What mass of zinc occupies 58.28cm3 ? 23.6 g = = 2.7 to sig figs 8.7mL Use yellow packet find density of zinc D = m/v 7.14g/ml = m/58.28cm3 m = 416 grams

6 Unit Essential Question: What is density
Unit Essential Question: What is density? Daily EQ: Can we graph density? Warm-up 9/13/11 1) What is the density of 78 grams of aluminum that has a volume of 28.87mL? 2) How many grams of gold were found in the ship wreck if it occupied 435cm3 of space (density of gold is g/cm3) ?

7 Unit Essential Topic: Physical vs Chemical changes, The battle wages on !
Warm-up 9/12/11 Daily EQ: What three things indicate that you have had a chemical change/reaction? Evolution of Gas Formation of a precipitate (insoluble solid) Transfer of heat (endothermic or exothermic)

8 9/13/11 What in the world? Make a list of all the things you noticed when you came in the room today? Everything you saw on the way to your desk

9 Scientific Method What are the steps of the scientific method?
Observation has to be first 2) State the problem 3) Form hypothesis 4)Perform Experiment 5)Collect data 6)Analyze data 7)Form conclusion 8)Repeat

10 ` Define following variable independent variable – dependent variable
scientific method - list steps accuracy precision Test next Tuesday. Yay!!!

11 9/14/11 If a spider web size is measure on different amounts of caffeine graph the following results 1ug – 1.5ug – 2ug – 2.5ug – 3.0 ug -

12 Make sure you know intensive extensive physical vs chemical density
mass volume – 2 ways to find matter – 3 phases and hamburger scientific method – all steps variables, controls, constants

13 Unit EQ: What is the difference btwn Physical and Chemical changes, The battle wages on !
Warm-up 9/14/11 Calculate the volume of 68 grams of aluminum. Use back of book. Calculate the volume of 46.7 grams of ethanol. Density ethanol is .7893g/mL.

14 Unit EQ: What is the difference btwn Physical and Chemical changes, The battle wages on! EQ: What is chromatography? Warm-up 9/15/11 1)What is a precipitate? 2) Copy graphic organizer on page 50

15 Chromatography Lab Get a piece of chromatography paper
Make a line across the paper with a vis-a-vis marker 2 cm from one end Place a mL of water in a beaker Tape the chromatography paper to a pencil and hang in middle of beaker, tip if paper just touching the water Watch and see the magic while working on review sheet

16 Test on Thursday! Warm-up
A boy is trying to move a desk into his bedroom. The bedroom doorway is 0.97 m wide. The desktop measures 154 cm x 86 cm. Is the desk narrow enough to fit through the doorway? Explain your answer.
