3 Task Why do people in LEDCs generally have more children?
Create a mind map with your ideas. What advantages/disadvantages does this pose?

4 Population Pyramids

5 The UKs population Pyramid

6 Why are population pyramids different in LEDCs and MEDCs?
They are different because of industrial and economic development of the country. Lesser developed countries usually have a high birth rate (this is due to less birth control and education) and a high death rate (this is due to less medical attention). This will make the shape of a triangle, with the majority of the population at a lower age. More developed countries have a low birth rate (due to more education about birth control) and a low death rate (because of better medical attention). This will make the shape look almost the opposite of LEDC.

7 Traditionally why are Birth Rates high in LEDCs?
Children are needed to look after their parents Infant mortality rates are high so birth rates make up for this It is hoped children will grow up & move to the city for work sending money home Religion often forbids the use of birth control In villages more children can be a sign of higher social status Women are rarely educated above primary level

8 Why is life expectancy lower in LEDCs?
Lack of food and famine cause many deaths The spread of disease is higher. E.g. Cholera caused by drinking dirty water Health care and hospitals are often poor and difficult to access

9 So what problems does this cause?
Overgrazing and over cultivation
