1 Controls and Variables WS

2 Instructions The following slides will go through the worksheet with you. Read each slide to complete the worksheet. Please really try to understand it because you will be tested on the material on the EOC.

3 Patty Power Read the scenario. Which people are in the control group?
This is the group that represents normal conditions so, which group represents normal conditions (nothing is changed)? What is the independent variable? This is the variable that is deliberately changed by the experimenter, so what is changed about the groups? What is the dependent variable? This is the variable that changes in response to the independent variable (hence it depends on the independent variable), so what is being measured in each group?

4 Patty Power, cont. What should Mr. Crab’s conclusion be?
The conclusion determines whether or not the hypothesis was supported, so did the new sauce cause the participants to have less gas? Why do you think 8 people in group B reported feeling better? This is your own opinion, responses may vary.

5 Slimotosis Read the scenario. What was the initial observation?
What did Spongebob notice? What is the independent variable? What is being changed? What is the dependent variable? What are they measuring? What should Spongebob’s conclusion be? What worked?

6 Marshmallow Muscles Which person is in the control group?
Which represents normal conditions? What is the independent variable? What is different about each person? What is the dependent variable? What is being measured? What should Larry’s conclusion be? Did the muscle cream work?

7 Microwave Miracle What was Patrick’s hypothesis?
What does he believe? Which fish are in the control group? Normal conditions? What is the independent variable? What is different about the food? What is the dependent variable? What is being measured? What should Patrick’s conclusion be? Was his hypothesis supported?

8 Etc. If you need any additional help, just ask!
