9 90% Now, over 90% of all premises in Northern Ireland are connected to a fibre cabinet offering download speeds of up to 80Mb and upload speeds of up to 20Mb. This places NI at the forefront of fibre broadband roll-out in Europe

10 Can Rural Areas get Fibre?

11 Over 3,500km of fibre was installed predominantly in rural areas.
Over 70% of new fibre cabinets provided as part of the DETI project were in rural locations. Over 3,500km of fibre was installed predominantly in rural areas. Fibre broadband has been rolled out extensively in rural areas. In fact, two thirds of the funds for the DETI Next Generation Broadband Project were for the provision of broadband in rural areas.

Highest average download speeds Over 90% of premises are connected to a fibre-enabled cabinet More than 114,000 premises are already using the high speed service, with residents and businesses in urban and rural areas seeing the benefits that fibre broadband can bring. A number of exchanges in Northern Ireland are in the Top 10 exchanges in UK with highest uptake of fibre broadband! 1 in 8 new fibre orders in UK are in NI – (12.5 %) According to Ofcom, average download speeds1 in Northern Ireland have increased from 6.3 Mbits/s a year ago to 14.4 Mbit/s. This compares to the UK average of 12.7 Mbit/s.

15 How to get fibre broadband?
The network is open access Check availability on nibroadband.com Currently 25 internet service providers Currently 25 internet service providers are using the fibre optic network to sell directly to their own customers in NI. This brings choice and competition.

17 Why can’t I get fibre broadband?
A distance dependent technology Fibre broadband is available up to approx. 2km from a fibre enabled cabinet Technical Reasons Commercial Reasons They are too far from a fibre-enabled cabinet (over 2km from cabinet) They are connected directly to the exchange and not via fibre-enabled cabinet To date, it is not commercially viable to fibre-enable their cabinet
