Prepared By Prof. Dr. Mohamed Khaled Hammouda “ CCM - Lecturer IHF ” India – Jammu November 2012 Goalkeeping in Handball

The goalkeeper is the player who by virtue of his position –is the last hurdle in the path of ball thus his defense work is directly specialized to prevent goal shooting

Basic position The primary condition of effecting defense work is to take such a starting position from which the goalkeeper can move his body and limbs quickly, accurately and expediently at any moment and in any direction

BASIC MOVEMENTS

Saving shots

1-Saving long range shots Usually the long range is approximately 7 - 10 meters from middle back section of the court.

A- Two handed saving A-Saving high positioned balls B- One handed saving

B-SAVING MEDIUM – HIGH POSITIONED BALLS

C-Saving low positioned balls A – SLIDING OUT B – BREAKING OUT

2-SAVING SIDE SHOTS In case of shots from the wings the shooting angle is greatly reduced less surface of the goal

A- Saving at the near post

B- SAVING BY JUMP OUT

3-Saving close range shots The common feature of these shots is that’s the attacker by getting behind the defenders can execute a goal shot from close range in an advantageous position

A- SAVING A CLEAR SCORING CHANCE

B- SAVING LOB SHOTS

The goalkeeper needs a big amount of muscular coordination which in turn depends on his kinetic maturity.. As he mainly needs to adjust the direction of his movements towards the ball which means developing the sensitivity of adjusting his body focus along with the ball GOALKEEPERS PREPARATION

The goal keeper needs to develop his motion sensitivity in moving to both sides, forward & backward. Also & as he usually uses his limbs, he needs to develop the speed of his arms & legs.

The goalkeeper needs to develop the speed of decision making against the shooting situations from different positions. Also he needs to develop the speed of locomotion between different positions in front of the goal as he needs to transfer quickly between locomotion to facing the ball & then back to locomotion again when the ball moves

The main principle in facing the shots is dividing the defensive job between the goalkeeper & the alternating defender which means a big need to develop the speed of cooperation between both of them in different positions.

The goalkeeper has to follow the motion of the ball during the whole defending period which needs developing the AUTOMATION of following the ball motion & moving along with it.

PREDICTION Prediction is one of the most important talents for a handball goalkeeper as he needs to predict the best position of the opponent offender to shoot so that he can be ready facing this position

Both of the speed of movement frequency & the speed of response are very important for a goalkeeper as they integrate together in one frame to form the main job for handball goalkeepers

A goalkeeper does not have a defending job only, but he can be an offender also, which means that he must have the ability to transfer quickly from defending to offending. ****************
