2000 Pan American High Performance Coaching Course February 10 – 15, 2009 Hamilton, Bermuda Course Conductors: FIH Coach Grade 1 – ShiazVirjee (Canada) FIH Coach - William (Bill) Gaudette (USA), FIH Coach Olympian - Jorgelina Rimoldi (Argentina)

Elite Goalkeeping 3 Goalkeepers working, if GK is scored on, he is out till another gk makes a mistake Get in place Quickly Good distribution back Change size of balls- mini balls makes the actual ball bigger and the need to be exact

Elite GK Clear not just rebound, Save Forward If you merely rebound, get up a face it, in training don’t just play the drill, train the skill GK needs 10 saves before 10 scores. Makes competitive Hands take body to ground, not your body taking hands to the ground In training, your focus is on the GK, not the forwards providing shooting. Goalkeeper saves, one save and out, no diving to start, footwork only, get in quickly, move your feet, save and out.

Elite GK Common error – GK goes down too early. Great save: 1 st requirement is footwork to generate the momentum to get to the save In 3’s, one GK toss and 2 nd GK deflect to 3 rd GK

Elite GK Saves on left post – save near the post with blocker –Clear ball out of bounds –Footwork to propel body and hand –Make eye contact with shooter before shot –Recover a bit to ball & keep your hands in front of you.

Elite GK Deflecting 2GK in cage Requires good shooters

Elite GK Point Blank Point blank shots, not far post, point blank but not too hard, body weight forward, see 1 st touch, keep shape, get up and face.

Elite GK GK can gain a little ground, make it more difficult to score. See ball off stick If GK is not achieving success, make adjustment. Get set but it is not going to be a perfect position When performance drops off, get them up again to leave exercise on positive note GK must protect space behind defenders of the modern game

Elite GK Aerials – anticipate the ball going up under the top bar, if it does not you can always go out. Get on your horse to get back with footwork. Start back to center of goal when going back I prefer to work with 3 GK’s but many National teams have 4, plan a rotation

Elite GK It’s a shooting game, goalkeeper must organize weak post, use names, a shooting game, GK must make keeper calls, defense clears out to Big X players who may not enter, Don’t sit on goal line as goal is too big Create goal scoring opportunities, should be point blank, create something that can lead to a score
