Today’s objective: The Wonderful World of Commas 6.20: Students will write legibly and use appropriate capitalization and punctuation conventions in their compositions.

The Seven Rules of Commas Learn these rule to become a true English master! Copy these in your Writer’s Journal in the NOTES section.

Rule 1 Put a comma: before FANBOYS (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so) when they connect two complete sentences. We may leave Friday, or we may wait until Monday.

Rule 2 Put a comma between items in a series. Our flag’s colors are red, white and blue. For breakfast the scouts cooked eggs, bacon, juice and toast. We hiked across town, through the woods and into the cave.

Rule 3 Put a comma between city and state, between weekday and month, and between day and year. Selena Gomez was born July 22, 1992 in Grand Prairie, Texas. Mikey B. was born Monday, Dec. 2, 2001

Rule 4 Put a comma after an introductory expression to help it flow smoothly into the sentence. Yes of course, I'd love to go swimming!

Rule 5 Put commas around the name of a person spoken to. I think, Dawn, that you are absolutely right. Ephraim, how about a game of tennis? I've finished waxing your surfboard, Skyler.

Rule 6 Put commas around transition words or phrases such as however, therefore, finally, of course, come to think of it, etc. Finally, I finished my homework and went to bed. My mom makes a delicious lasagna; moreover, her manicotti is the best ever! Soccer fans typically cheer loudly; golf spectators, on the other hand, must remain quiet. By the way, I fed the dogs and watered the plants.

Rule 7 Put commas around nonessential material. The trick to decide whether material is essential is to ask, "Interesting, but is it necessary?" Dorothea Fox, who is running for mayor, will speak tonight.

Now you must practice 1.Work within your table groups to add commas where they are needed in the sentences. 2.Don’t forget to add all the names of the people in your group! 3.When you are done, begin the Workbook assignment over capitalization: Pages 150-155 Practice A only Odd #s only
