What’s the glue we use to put sentences together? Comma, coordinating conjunctions Semicolon Period NOT just a comma NOT just a coordinating conjunction These all make compound sentences (we’re gluing two sentences together)

But what if we want a different kind of glue that gives different information? We can add another sentence to a sentence that tells us “when” We will go to the store after we eat. We will go to the store before we eat. We will go to the store while we eat. We will go to the store when we eat We will go to the store as soon as we eat The bolded words are called “subordinating conjunctions” They glue together two sentences to form a COMPLEX SENTENCE

Subordinating conjunctions: When We could also switch around the word order, and it would mean the same thing After we eat, we will go to the store. Before we eat, we will go to the store. While we eat, we will go to the store. When we eat, we will go to the store As soon as we eat, we will go to the store

Subordinating conjunctions: condition We can add another sentence to a sentence that tells us a condition We will go to the store if we eat. (If we eat, we will go to the store) We will go to the store as long as we eat. (As long as we eat, we will go to the store) We will go to the store provided that we eat. (Provided that we eat, we will go to the store) We will go to the store unless we eat. (Unless we eat, we will go to the store) The bolded words are called “subordinating conjunctions” They glue together two sentences to form a COMPLEX SENTENCE

Subordinating conjunctions: contrast We can add another sentence to a sentence that shows a contrast We will go to the store even though we ate. (Even though we ate, we will go to the store) We will go to the store although we ate. (Although we ate, we will go to the store) We will go to the store though we ate. (Though we ate, we will go to the store) We will go to the store whereas they will eat. (Whereas they will eat, we will go to the store) The bolded words are called “subordinating conjunctions” They glue together two sentences to form a COMPLEX SENTENCE

Subordinating conjunctions: reason We can add another sentence to a sentence that shows a reason We will go to the store because we ate. (Because we ate, we will go to the store) We will go to the store since we ate. (Since we ate, we will go to the store) The bolded words are called “subordinating conjunctions” They glue together two sentences to form a COMPLEX SENTENCE

Remember We use subordinating conjunctions to combine, “glue together,” two sentences (complete thoughts) They are just another option in addition to FANBOYS They can’t be with a sentence by itself Since we know him well. ……………….we went out together When I went to the store………………….I saw my friend Bob. If you show me your assignment. …………… (then) I’ll show you mine.
