2.  By 1927 Stalin was almost fully in charge of the Communist Party  His final rivals were within the Party and he used a strong new economic policy to solidify his rule  Advisors told Stalin that to increase modernization of agriculture would require 250,000 tractors and the development of oil fields to fuel the tractors.  (Irony: that’s called capital.)

3.  Economic plan focused on industrialization  Increase production in iron & steel, machine tools, electric power, transport  Claimed if Russia did not industrialize rapidly, they wouldn’t be able to defend against capitalist western countries  (wait, why are they already planning a war? LoN?)  Output numbers were closely tracked and Stalin set high goals for his workers  This plan solidified Stalin’s rule

4.  Every factory had a display board with the output numbers of its workers  Some crumbled under this pressure and quit, then were sent to work in remote locations… Baltic Sea Canal or Siberia in Gulags Canal Army Man! “The heat of your work will melt your prison term!”

7. “Look Me in the Eyes and Tell Me Honestly: Who is your friend? Who is your enemy? You have no friends among capitalists. You have no enemies among the workers. Only in a union of the workers of all nations will you be victorious over capitalism and liberated from exploitation. Down with national antagonisms! Workers of the world unite!”

8.  Your goal is to understand two things:  Why did Stalin feel the need to industrialize the Soviet Union so quickly?  At what cost did industrialization take place?
