1 Tissue Trauma 1. Inflammation - body’s response that attempts to prevent further injury. 2. Immune Response - Mounts a vigorous attack against recognized invaders (i.e. bacteria, viruses and toxins) When trauma occurs the body’s inflammatory and immune responses are stimulated.

2 Tissue Repair The two major ways wound healing occurs is : 1.Regeneration and 2.Fibrosis Regeneration- the replacement of destroyed tissue by the same kind of cells. Fibrosis – repair by dense fibrous connective tissue or scar tissue. Two reasons scar tissue occurs: 1.The type of tissue damaged 2.The severity of the injury

3 Tissue injury sets a series of events into motion 1. The capillaries become very permeable A.Clotting proteins B.When clot is exposed to air it dries forming the scab 2. Granulation tissue forms A.Delicate pink tissue composed of new capillaries

4 Tissue Repair Figure 4.12a 3. The surface epithelium regenerates A.Epithelium heals under the scab. 4. Organization and restored blood supply The blood clot is replaced with granulation tissue 5. Regeneration and fibrosis Surface epithelium regenerates and the scab detaches
