1 Amytrophic Lateral Sclerosis Also known as Lou Gherig’s Disease Joe Duggan Brett Kunkel

2 Inheritance of ALS/ALS Only 10% of ALS cases are hereditary. Most cases occur at random w/ no risk factors. ALS is a motor nueron disease. – Means it affects the nerve cells It shuts down your muscles that are normally under your control.

3 Symptoms/Occurance In early ALS, you may notice… – Having trouble walking, slight muscle failure. As it continues the disease spreads in your body. Eventually all muscles are affected. Not common disorder. About 200,000 to 300,000 people have it. About 5,000 people get it in a year. More commonly found in men.

4 Lifespan/Cure The lifespan of an ALS patient is about 3-5 years. No treatment, alhough thy do have a drug called riluzole. It cannot be cured, not enough about it is known.

5 Family Most families should not worry. – B/C their risk of getting ALS is no higher than it was before. Only emotionally affected.

6 Personally What Joe personally learned… – I learned that ALS affects the muscles and pretty much takes them away. What Brett personally learned… – I learned that there is no true cure for ALS yet.
