Mitosis  Catalyst  How many cells do you think you started out as? Why do you think that?  If I had a recipe and I wanted to give it to my sister in Oakland, how could I make sure that both of us have it? Write in complete sentences! Don’t talk during the Catalyst!

Mini-Unit: Cellular Reproduction

Objectives By the end of today, SWBAT…  Describe the purpose and process of mitosis  Explain the role of DNA and chromosomes in mitosis

Reproduction  Key Point #1: There are two types of reproduction.  Asexual reproduction  one parent, all identical children  Sexual reproduction  two parents, children all different.

So, why do our cells need to reproduce?

Getting Big  Key Point #1: Multicellular organisms get bigger because they make more somatic cells.  Somatic cells = your body cells (like liver, brain, blood, etc.)  This is how we GROW & DEVELOP

Humans are filled with cells like this beaker is filled with Skittles Cells Skittles

Humans grow by getting more cells!

How many cells do we begin with?

2

How do we get more?

One cell divides into two cells… …then four, eight, sixteen… Mitosis = the process of cell division.

Do you think mitosis…  Is used for asexual reproduction or sexual reproduction??? Mitosis is ASEXUAL reproduction because all cells are identical.

DNA  Key Point #2: Cells must make an EXACT copy of their DNA before they divide  Cells copy their DNA  Then, they divide in half  Every generation gets an identical copy of the DNA

DNA  Key Point #3: Cell DNA is organized into coils called chromosomes.  Somatic cells always have TWO COPIES of each type of chromosome

2 Legit 2 Quit  Somatic cells are 2N  2N = two of each type One from mommy One from daddy

So, with DNA…  We start out with two copies, that’s…  2N  After we make a copy that’s  4N!  The cell divides in half  2N again 4N

Notes Reflection (GP)  In your notes, you should be able to find answers FAST!  I am going to put up some questions and put a timer for 30 seconds and you should be able to find the answer in that time.  If you do not have the answer in your notes, ADD IT IN!!!  This is also a good time to highlight!

Guided Practice  What is the process of cell division called?

Guided Practice  How do organisms get bigger?

Guided Practice  After mitosis, the two new cells are ___________ to each other.

Guided Practice  How is DNA organized in a cell?

Guided Practice  What type of reproduction is happening when you have two parents and all the children are different?

Guided Practice  What is a somatic cell?

Guided Practice  What does a cell do to make sure that DNA is the same from generation to generation?

Guided Practice  How many N does a somatic cell have normally?

Guided Practice  How many N does a somatic cell after the cell duplicates its DNA?

Password  Split your group into two teams (two people per team)  I will put a password on the board.  Your goal is to get your teammate to say the password without saying it yourself  You want to beat the other team at your table!  Take turns describing and guessing

Chromosome The is…

Mitosis The is…

2N The is…

DNA The is…

Somatic Cell The is…

4N The is…

Asexual Reproduction The is…

Independent Work Time  Work on the worksheet…  What you do not finish is HOMEWORK!

Key Point Wrap-Up  Key Point #1: Multicellular organisms get bigger because they make more somatic cells.  Key Point #2: Cells must make an EXACT copy of their DNA before they divide  Key Point #3: Cell DNA is organized into coils called chromosomes.

Exit Question  What is a somatic cell?  Why is it important that DNA doubles before mitosis? Write in complete sentences! Don’t talk during the Exit Question!
