1 Write in complete sentences! Don’t talk during the Catalyst!
Mitosis Write in complete sentences! Don’t talk during the Catalyst! Catalyst How many cells do you think you started out as? Why do you think that? If I had a recipe and I wanted to give it to my brother in New York, how could I make sure that both of us have it?

2 HOMEWORK: Mitosis Worksheet
Agenda Catalyst HW Review Mitosis – MiTWOsis? BRAIN GAIN Practice EQ HOMEWORK: Mitosis Worksheet

3 19. Compare photosynthesis and cellular respiration
19. Compare photosynthesis and cellular respiration. (Compare means to “Identify how they are the same.”) 20. Contrast photosynthesis and cellular respiration. (Contrast means to “Identify how they are different.”) 21. Which cellular process produces ATP? 22. What would happen if the sun stopped shining tomorrow? Answer in terms of ATP, photosynthesis, and cellular respiration. (Use these vocabulary words!) 23. Photosynthesis produces glucose, which stores energy. Why is it important that cellular respiration transforms glucose into ATP?

4 SUN ATP! Why do we need the sun? Glucose CELLULAR RESPIRATION
SOLAR ENERGY CHEMICAL ENERGY CHEMICAL ENERGY CELLULAR RESPIRATION PHOTOSYNTHESIS

5 HW Review glucose ATP sunlight chemical chemical photosynthesis

6 By the end of today, SWBAT…
Objectives By the end of today, SWBAT… Describe the purpose and basic process of mitosis Explain the role of DNA and chromosomes in mitosis This one may be a doozy.

7 Reproduction Key Point #1: There are two types of reproduction.
Asexual reproduction  one parent, all identical children Sexual reproduction  two parents, children are different

8 So, why do our cells need to reproduce?

9 Getting Big Two types of cells:
Key Point #1: Multicellular organisms get bigger because they make more somatic cells. Two types of cells: Somatic cells = your body cells (like liver, brain, blood, etc.) Sex cells = sperm and egg cells

10 Humans are filled with cells like this beaker is filled with Skittles
The yellow ones are like skin cells, The red ones are like brain cells, The purple ones are like muscle cells… all different types of cells we have! Cells Cells Skittles

11 Humans grow by getting more cells!
You get more purple, you get more red, you get more yellow… but cells do not get bigger

12 How many cells do we begin with?

13 2

14 How do we get more?

15 One cell divides into two cells…
MITOSIS = the process of somatic cell division. Notice that each cell is an EXACT COPY. …then four, eight, sixteen…

16 Mitosis is ASEXUAL reproduction because all cells are identical.
Do you think mitosis… is used for asexual reproduction or sexual reproduction??? Mitosis is ASEXUAL reproduction because all cells are identical.

17 DNA Key Point #2: Cells must make an EXACT copy of their DNA before they divide DNA = Deoxyribonucleic acid Cells copy their DNA Then, they divide in half Every generation gets an identical copy of the DNA Last bullet make them think.

18 Why do cells need to make a copy of their DNA before they divide?

19 DNA Key Point #3: Cell DNA is organized into coils called chromosomes.
Chromosomes are pieces of coiled DNA. They look like Xs. CFU: What does DNA do again? (Instructions for how a cell should run)

20 2 Legit 2 Quit In humans, somatic cells have 23 different types of chromosomes Somatic cells are 2N 2N = two of each type One from mommy One from daddy

21 Ok… If we have two copies of each chromosome, how many copies do we have after we duplicate? FOUR! Using N… 4N! 4N

22 Notes Reflection (GP) In your notes, you should be able to find answers FAST! I am going to put up some questions. Within 30 seconds, should be able to find the answer. If you do not have the answer in your notes, ADD IT IN!!! Trying to reinforce good note taking. If you do not make good notes that you will suck at this game.
