Eukaryotic Cellular Organelles A detailed description of each organelle’s structure and function

Recall the similarities and differences between prokaryotes and eukaryotes.

What kind of human cells are in these pictures? How is each cell’s function related to its structure?

Label the Animal Cell

Label the Plant Cell

Cells produce different products Just like different factories manufacture different products, different cells produce different chemical products

Match the product with the company that manufactures it: 1. Paper plates 2. Sofas 3. Chocolate bars 4. Sneakers 5. Trucks a) Nike b) Hershey c) Dixie d) Ford e) Raymour and Flannigan

Match the protein or lipid with the cell/tissue type that manufactures it: 1. Hemoglobin 2. Insulin 3. Testosterone 4. Collagen 5. Histamine a) Pancreas b) Ovaries/testes c) Skin d) White blood cells e) Bone marrow

The Cell is Like a Factory Just like a factory has many departments to help it run smoothly, a cell has many compartments, called organelles, that help it function.

Cell Organelle Jigsaw Each lab group will research one set of organelles for the rest of the class.  Draw and describe each structure  Describe each function  In Plant or Animal cells? Suggested Resources:  Textbook  http://www.biology4kids.com/files/cell_main.html http://www.biology4kids.com/files/cell_main.html  http://www.cellsalive.com/cells/3dcell.htm http://www.cellsalive.com/cells/3dcell.htm  http://micro.magnet.fsu.edu/cells/index.html http://micro.magnet.fsu.edu/cells/index.html  Any other reliable resource Visit each station collecting information for each structure

The nucleus is like the Boss of the factory…

Quick Check  What are cells called that have a nucleus?  What are some examples of cells that have a nucleus?  In what ways are chromatin and chromosomes different?  What is the relationship between the nuclear envelope and the nucleus?  What is the relationship between the nucleolus and the nuclear pores?

The Endomembrane System consists of organelles that operate like an assembly line to manufacture products.

The Endomembrane System

How will you remember the difference between the Rough ER and the Smooth ER?

The Golgi is like the packaging and shipping department…

Creative Understanding: Journal of a Protein  Cells manufacture proteins which serve many different functions within the cell or beyond the cell.  Imagine you are a protein—write journal entries describing your adventures as you are created and travel through the cell to your final destination.  Include your relationship with the following structures in your entries: nucleus, nucleolus, ribosome, rough Er, smooth ER, Golgi apparatus, vesicles, vacuole, lysosome and cell membrane

Stop and Think:  What are the similarities between these? What are the differences?  Rough ER, Smooth ER  Smooth ER, Golgi Apparatus  Nucleus, Nucleolus  Ribosomes, Rough ER  Vesicle, Vacuole  Vacuole, Lysosome

Draw a Cell  Choose either an animal or plant cell  Copy from any diagram you choose, or draw your own interpretation  Include all internal structures  Color!!

The mitochondria and chloroplasts are the energy producers…

Mitochondria Chloroplasts

Quick Check  How are mitochondria and chloroplasts similar? Different?  How are they related?  Describe the characteristics they have in common with bacteria.  Plant cells contain both mitochondria and chloroplasts. Explain why they must contain both.

The cytoskeleton is like the building’s framework…

Cytoskeleton: a network of protein fibers throughout the inside of the cell; gives it structure and enables movement. Microtubules: thin protein tubes which organelles travel along Involved in Cell division Microfilaments: supports the cell’s shape, and allows it to move.

Cell Motility Some cells have external structures that enable them to move, or to move things around them!

Some cells have tiny projections, called Cilia that help to move things around them, like how a crowd moves a crowd surfer!

…Or their cilia may help to move the whole cell.

Some other cells have flagella, long, whip-like structures, to help propel them.

The Inner Life of a Cell

Cell Analogy Poster  Choose a theme that you can compare to the cell (factory)  Decide which elements of your theme have functions analogous to cell structures (the factory line is like the rough ER).  Write a title on your poster “A Plant Cell is Like a Factory”  Use the entire poster to draw your theme and label the elements with the analogous cell structure (manager:nucleus)  On the back, write a sentence explaining how each element of your theme is like a structure in a cell (The factory line makes circuit breakers like the rough ER makes proteins)
