56 Some cultures lived in America for many centuries but then they disappeared. They left tools pottery and other artifacts behind. They also left carvings and paintings on rocks called rock art. Petroglyphs (rock carvings) show human figures animals and some designs that are not easily explained. Artists made petroglyphs with small pointed rocks or flat stones.
