DECIMAL AND PERCENT CONVERSIONS By: Quinton Henderson And Richard Pope

Definition Percent can be defined as “of one hundred.” 100 of

50 % Means 50 parts out of 100 or 50 hundredths. 12345678910 11121314151617181920 21222324252627282930 31323334353637383940 41424344454647484950 51525354555657585960 61626364656667686970 71727374757677787980 81828384858687888990 919293949596979899 100

LET’S WORK SMART AND NOT HARD! HINT: WHEN CONVERTING PERCENT TO DECIMALS, TAKE THE PERCENT SIGN (%) OFF AND REPLACE IT WITH A DECIMAL. ONCE THE DECIMAL IS IN PLACE, MOVE THE DECIMAL 2 PLACES TO THE LEFT. SO 50% BECOMES 0.50 OR 0.5

LET’S PRACTICE CONVERT THE FOLLOWING PERCENTS INTO DECIMALS 16% 55% 720%

ANSWERS!!!! 16% =0.16= 16 or 4 100 25 55%=0.55= 55 or 11 100 20 720% = 7.20 or 7.2 = 720 or 7 1 100 5

LET’S TAKE A SHORT CUT! Hint: When converting decimals to percent, move the decimal 2 places to the right. Once the decimal is in place, place the percent sign (%) at the end of the number. Examples: 0.72 becomes 72% 0.257 becomes 25.7%

PRACTICE TIME!! Convert the following decimals to percent. 0.52 0.9 0.135

LET’S SEE HOW WELL YOUR DID! 0.52 = 52% = 52 = 13 100 25 0.9 = 90% = 90 = 9 100 10 0.175 = 17.5% = 175 = 7 1000 40

LET’S PRACTICE! How would eighteen thousandths be written as a percent? About 95% of all fish species have skeletons made of bone. Express 95% as a decimal. How would ten and four tenths percent be expressed as a decimal?

GET, READY, SET, GO! ANSWERS!!!!! DECIMAL PERCENT 0.018 1.8% PERCENT DECIMAL 95% 0.95 PERCENT DECIMAL 10.4% 0.104

REFLECTIONS How are percents, decimals and fractions similar? How are they different? List your reasons and let us discuss them.
