Mystery October Genre of the Month

Mystery Mystery stories are fiction stories in which a detective solves a crime or a series of crimes. The detective character in a mystery may be a private investigator, a police officer, an elderly man or woman, an animal such as a cat or dog, or a young girl or boy. The detective usually does not get paid for solving the crime. He or she just does it for enjoyment.

Secret Symbols Remember, Secret Symbols are hidden in random books that fall into the Genre of the Month. To find a Secret Symbol, you must check out a book that falls into the Genre of the Month. If you find a Secret Symbol, bring the symbol and the book back to the Media Center on your next visit and you will win a prize! And remember if you find a Secret Symbol, it’s a secret as to what it looks like. So don’t tell anyone. Let everyone have a chance to discover the “secret” for themselves.

Previous Genres of the Month These are stories that are not true, but teach a true lesson. Tall tales, fables, and legends are many times found in the non- fiction section because of the lessons they teach. These are stories that are believable, but not true. Realistic stories are set in the present. Realistic fiction stories do not have characters like aliens, talking animals, or fairies.

Tall Tales A tall tale is story with unbelievable elements that is told as if it were really true. Many tall tales are written about real people, but the events in the story are very exaggerated.

Fables A fable is a short, make-believe story that teaches a lesson. The characters in a fable are usually animals.

Legends A legend is a story, usually about a person, that is passed down and is considered historical, but not necessarily true.

Realistic Fiction Realistic fiction is believable fiction that takes place in the present.
